i agree with all of you, but also try to analyze deeple the ref. decision, he decide penalty instantly because the move was like the defender try to block the ball with the arm and the move after the chest touch it was a reflex back hand, the REF. take the decision after he saw the back review, becaus the front reviw clearly touch teh chest and then slides softly into the bizeps, you have to take in count that the initial decision conditioned the REF with him self and he had to suport his own final detrmination.

This is why Referees are supposed to wait until there is a stoppage in play so that VAR can review any incident. Unfortunately, the VAR team does not have the guts to overturn a decision made by the referee. The exact same thing happened today to help Madrid win...the referee took it upon himself to call a PK prior to VAR, but of course VAR won't overturn that decision because it will make the referee look incompetent. It's really a disgrace. Unless its an absolutely clear cut foul or handball, the referee should refrain from blowing his whistle.

But VAR instead helped Inter...asking refereee to check once more by video to confirm whether he made a correct decision or not. I'm kind of on the fence with this one. The last penalty was soft, but not outrageous, so the customary Italian conspiracy theorizing is out of place. In real time it looked like a hand ball, so the ref called it that. The VAR, while suggesting that this might not have been correct, was still somewhat inconclusive, so the call on the field stood. This is the correct and proper procedure. The VAR should only make errors of omission, not commission. You can't really tell that well from the video here, which unfortunately zooms past all three controversial calls rather than showing us slo-mo close-ups, but the ball pretty clearly hits D'Ambrosio's chest. But then it also appears to run down most of his arm, which he had just extended. After the ball strikes his arm, he tucks it behind his back. I don't know what the rules say about this. It was presumably involuntary, but the arm was extended and the rules say that extended arms are automatically voluntary. Plus it wasn't just a little bounce off the arm. He actually seems to control the ball somewhat with his arm. This is why it looked like a handball in the first place. I've seen many similar plays called penalties. I thought Fiorentina coach Pioli's comment was good. Namely that he wouldn't call any of these types of things penalties, but since they are now customarily called, then it's appropriate to do so here as well. They keep making rule changes that make it harder on the defense, and I think that's cheapening the game.
