I watched this with great joy - I spent many fantastic evenings in the pubs of Salisbury when I was posted to an office there in the mid-80s for over a year. We were based in Fish Row, and used the Haunch of Venison like our company canteen - we were in there every lunchtime. A guy named Tony and his wife Vicky ran it then: superb beer (Courage Best/Directors, kept wonderfully well, plus specials like Gales and Wadworths) and food - even the bar menu was very enjoyable (pies etc.). The restaurant upstairs was very gourmet back then - and you've shown what a historic setting it is. Back then, pubs used to shut in the afternoon, but on market day they were allowed to stay open if they wished - so we used to go in the Ox Row, which you showed, after the Haunch closed. A workmate who lived in the city lived not far from the Wyndham Arms, so I knew that place, as well as some of the other city centre pubs - but the Haunch was always the best!

Salisbury used to be home to a draught barley wine called Bishops Tipple, usually served in halves only! The brewery was Gibbs Mew. Great video Simon, wetted my appetite for a visit.

Finally a harmless tourist looking for the Cathedral of Salisbury. I've been watching this series and been compiling a list of pubs to visit once I make it to England. Been saving for a while. OMG Phil Harding, the best guy from Time Team

Something I don't understand is why we don't get some TV show of Phil Harding touring the English country side and telling us about all the interesting nooks and crannies there. You'd make a great companion on such a tour I think. Maybe a tour of the greatest English pubs, or some pubs with odd names and explaining the history behind that.

Also saw the Schlenkerla Rauchbier there at Sipps, a beer worth reviewing, one of the only two old style "smoke ales" = Rauchbier out there. During malting there is a smokey flavour imparted on the malt which carries on into the beer, unlike other fake smoke flavoured beer this is imparted by the original malting process. Was very impressed with the cleanliness and organized setup of Dark Revolution, what a neat place.

The Haunch of Venison almost looks like the perfect archetypal British pub in my mind. Ancient, comfy, lots of fireplaces. Sadly no such pubs around here in Northeast Texas, and sadly also this is not an ideal climate for fireplaces. Too bad Britain has such ridiculous levels of government regulation and interference, if not for that it would be an ideal place to live. Cheers!

Incredible pub’s but I’ve got to say and I don’t think you’ll like it but personally I wouldn’t wash my feet in 50%of those beers which is sad because the older pub’s were the ones with those beers ,also I don’t think Hop Back brewed the original blond beer maybe you weren’t old enough to have drunk the original Boddingtons but that was extremely straw coloured ,and regarding Proper Job I’m not convinced anymore it seems a different beer depending where you get it 🤔

Nothing to do with Salisbury at all. It's a version of a Hamburg steak that was being promoted in the US during the mid-19th century by James Salisbury a US physician and chemist.

Red stripe is awful in the UK, they add glucose syrup to it, which in my mind makes any drink these large won't call them breweries but mass production company's so sweet and sickly. I have been to Jamica and it's a completely different and much better larger, TO me I don't see why they have to change an ingredient when brewed in another country, don't fiddle with it.
