I'm not british and I didn't really know much about remembrance day (except the omnipresent poppies)..... The war memorial day in my country is very different, although beeing held in November too. Here it's the sunday two weeks before the first sunday in advent (it will be the 19th of November this year). The name is also not derived from remembering, translated it's "national mourning day". I also can't recall it beeing so present throughout the media like it is in the UK.

That veteran looks like my great grandad George (Teddy). I have happy memories as a child putting 10p pieces in a slot of his wooden leg! He told me as a 4 year old that i needed to make a wish as it would give me good luck
