This second story from the South African War tells of the life of General Sir Redvers Buller, born on the 7th December 1839 at the family estate of Downes just outside Crediton.
The family - which originally hailed from Cornwall - was wealthy, meaning Redvers (pronounced Reevers) had something of a privileged upbringing. After being schooled at Eaton, he purchased a commission as an officer in the army and served with distinction in Canada and Africa.
He then won his Victoria Cross in the Zulu War, rescuing a number of comrades while under fire.
It was during this conflict that he caught the eye of his superiors, showing courage, determination and an ability to lead.
"An admirable captain, an adequate major, a barely satisfactory colonel and a disastrous general."
Those were the less-than-flattering words used to describe General Sir Redvers Buller, winner of the Victoria Cross, one of Devon's most decorated heroes and also one of the most controversial figures in British military history.
