Great review! I absolutely loved this series and would definitely consider it one of my favourites. I just loved Isabella's voice as a narrator and her character in general. What I really appreciated was how she would acknowledge her personal biases towards the various cultures she interacted with in her narration. She just felt so incredibly human. I also loved how in later books she was in her 30's. It's so rare to see a fantasy book where the protagonist is a middle aged woman going on adventures. So often society places a 'shelf life' on women. As for other dragon fantasy books, I plan on reading the Temeraire series by Naomi Novik in the near future. I believe it's sort of a retelling of the Napoleonic Wars but with dragons. (p.s. love the eye shadow!)

Thank you!! I agree with all your comments, I feel like Isabella is a rare treasure in the fantasy world for sure. An amazing and truly unique series! Ooh, never heard of Temeraire, but I think I've heard of the author, I will check that out. And thanks, I love sparkly eyes haha! :)

came to this after reading and rereading this whole series in a month back to back. mind you i’ve never in my life reread a single book much less a whole series. so i came her to hear other people gush about it because my friends and family are sick of me talking endlessly about it.

The audiobooks rock! I loved the science explorer feel and have felt so empty looking for more science protags.

I loved this series, but honestly the ending took me by surprise, the whole draconian half dragon people did not seem to fit with the “natural history” vibe throughout the series. The last book was disappointing

That’s fair, the last book did take things to a different level that made you suspend disbelief a lot harder than you had to for the rest of the series. I still liked it, but it does veer away from the first four books in that way, you’re right. I understand the disappointment!

If you listen to the audiobooks there's an author interview after book 2 or 3. In it she explains that the Draconeans are more than just a passing mystery. I think that was why I expected this ending or something more fantastical. I really liked the ending.

This series ties with The Lady Astronaut series for "Women challenging conventional ideas in science and history" except one is fantasy and the other is scifi.
