Seems like the shunt would be more efficient if the input voltage is close to desired output, especially if current is very high, since much less current would flow through shunt vs series regulator?

if the power source can be controlled, it is better to regulate the current from the electromagnetic rotor, so that the regulator will not be loaded with a large current to maintain the voltage.
