This is true about most waterman pens really. The are a bit forgotten by our market of enthusiasts (we don't hear about them much). They are not remarkable, but they are pretty nice. Their low-end is very popular in France. My wife gifted me with a Waterman Expert Precious some Father's Day long ago. It looks like the CT except that the cap is black and the bartel is chrome. Instead of the waves, it was a helical line coming down from the top of the cap all the way to its end finial. It was a very scratchy fine nib, but after the seller aligned and tuned it, the pen writes like a dream. BTW, it came with a Waterman converter. I guess different treatments for varying country retailers? I bring this pen with me during business meetings because the design looks elegant enough and gives an air of no-nonsense.

Nice review. Waterman does deserve more love than it gets these days. I have two Carenes, wonderful, elegant and with nice heft. I also have two Waterman Exception pens, one is the slim model and the other is the large Day and Night version, and I have several Waterman L'etalons, which are modern pens no longer in production. No surprise the best Waterman pens are moderately expensive to just plain expensive. For quite a while from the 1960s to 1980s a lot of Waterman pens were on the slender side - some quite slender, but I prefer average to beefy width. For those who like a more slender pen, there are some nice deals to be made online on "vintage" but still modern Watermans. They've been around for a long time and there are a lot still available, used or New Old Stock. It's interesting the new Waterman Expert III doesn't come with a converter, especially since it's in the new L'essence du bleu finish. My still in production Exception slim certainly did come with a converter, and so did the larger Exception Day and Night. The only other examples I know of pens that don't include converters are the Platinum 3776 and the Kaweco DIA2, and some Montblanc models are cartridge only. I have heard that Europeans prefer ink cartridges over converters, but it's still nice to get a converter when the pen can take both options. I'm interested in some truly vintage Waterman lever-fill fountain pens, but I'm picky about condition which makes vintage pen hunting more difficult. In particular, the Waterman W5, Commando and Hundred Year models.

I love the Waterman Expert, as I do all my modern Waterman pens. And I have many. I have the Expert III in black with a beautiful chrome cap with a kind of cross-hatch patterned design on it. The CT stands for chrome trim. The nib (mine is an M) writes reliably, smoothly, splendidly and slightly wider than you’d expect from a regular Western medium. The wavy silver cap finish on your L’eseence de Bleu pen actually looks identical to the finish on my Waterman Carene (the Essential Silver model) with the entire cap and barrel in that wavy design. Waterman is so chic and appealing. So, great choice, DB! I whole-heartedly endorse your review here. Mine came with the converter, a single long cartridge, and a bottle of Serenity Blue. A Waterman lover like me deserved no less, I think. For $160. My Expert pen is currently inked with Diamine Registrar’s Archival blue-black. A very business-y pen and ink pairing, don’t you think? 🙂

The Carene’s all round aesthetics is even nicer. The 18k inlaid nib is superb, but isn’t really leagues better or anything than the excellent steel nib on the Expert. If one had to own only one of them, though, I’d recommend them to save up for the Carene.

Hemisphere looks nice but my issue is, they are quite slippery, even more than the infamous Lamy Studio (which I never had many problems with). Plus mine didn't work at all when I bought it, return took forever, also didn't work and "nibmeister" they sent it after the second return messed it up so at the end I had to tune it myself. It started as a medium nib but now it's more like a double broad italic, so mostly unusable and I am looking into getting rid of it. Not my first Waterman that had bad nib, I have four other models and ALL of them had issues (Carene nib was a nightmare but I bought it for like 1/3 of the price, so I was not that mad about it).

Good looking pen; the section looks comfortable. I own a philleas. To my surprise a #6 nib will fit provided you use a bock feed along with it. I'm wondering if this is the case here as well.
@Doodlebud Жыл бұрын
Oh wow haven't heard of that. It might work but also have to keep in mind clearance inside the cap to accommodate a larger nib as well. Sounds like a fun mod

I had purchased mine last year(the regular black gt). And it came with a beautiful waterman cartridge converter included. They just include the CC and increase the price a little. If waterman can fix the section which is very prone to scratches. However my nib gets dried out in couple of weeks, If is there any solution to fix that the doodlebud way 😏!!!

Hmmm wonder if it doesn't seat just 100% correctly when the cap is on. I have that issue with another pen where others says their won't dry out for months sometimes

You will need either in cartridges or a converter (if not included) and a bottle of fountain pen ink.

I love my Watermans, but partial to the Carene (which I think punches in the same weight class as the Lamy 2000). For this price range though ($150+), I would recommend a Parker Sonnet (gold nibs!) over a Waterman Expert. Just stay clear of the Made in China Parkers.

I haven't tested this particular pen but I have a whole series of videos on travelling with pens on airplanes. I made up a mini vaccum chamber to replicate an airplane. I have a video coming up where I'll be testing some pens again and this will be one of them I test. So stay tuned. My Expert is one in the long line of disappointing Waterman pens that just don't work right outside of the box. I have fine nib and it's bad, even after replacement, dry, scratchy and trim ring above the nib corroded badly, even when I just left it uninked for half a year. I like the balance and designs is nice (mine is boring black and gold but still) but it doesn't work right. It was a gift, so I am apprehensive to mess with it but maybe it's something that has to be done. My business pens of choice are Kaweco Dia2, which came with medium nib, that was pretty bad but, you can buy nib units separate cheaply, so I bought extra fine one and bam, my second favourite pen in my collection; and Parker Sonnet, which is steel medium nib but has bounce and line variation like if it was gold. Juicy and beautiful, ideal size, posts nicely, also boring black/gold combo (bought it steeply discounted in a set with ballpoint which I gave away) but still looks great. P.S.: Even my Waterman convertor crapped out, and I was using it hardly at all with very safe inks. Lamy convertors would be the worst for me if that Waterman one worked but now it is the worst one.

I own this pen, and agree that it is great for the office. At $100 USD it would be an easy choice, but the pen is $170 USD, and there are many better offerings with steel or even gold nibs at that price. Sorry, Doodlebud.

I don't understand why pen companies make pens that you can't take completely apart. And no gold nib for a pen that costs over 250 bucks? Nah.
@Doodlebud Жыл бұрын
It all has to do with design, materials, manufacturing techniques & assembly processes. Depending on what combination is used above, not all things are meant to be taken apart. Not to mention, now you have to account for people who don't have extensive knowledge when it comes to knowing how to properly fit, assembly, and tighten parts. I had to do plenty of service calls where end users started adjusting things they weren't supposed to and now the system wouldn't work properly. Some parts on pens are press fit into place. Last thing you need is someone trying to seperate those parts when there's no need to
@AtilioEscobar Жыл бұрын
@@Doodlebud Totally understandable what you stated. My thing is not being able to see, or disassemble the piston/converter mechanism and properly/throughly cleaning it. If by chance the piston seizes for, whatever reason, now i can't fix it myself. I love PENBBS for having the ability to take everything apart. I have an Armando Simoni Club, Triangolo LE, in Arco Verde and the pneumatic filler stopped working. That pen...Difficult to disassemble. And their customer service..(crickets) Ha.=]
@seek-the_truth11 ай бұрын
Waterman don't include the converter due to the fact that they didn't invent that. 🤣The Romanian inventor Petrache Poenaru invented that in 1827 - "never-ending portable pen, which recharges itself with ink".

I grew up having to learn to write with fountain pen. Back then a $30 supermarket fountain pen would be as good any. Now quality is not as good you have to pay a lot more. I bought two Jane Davenport InkRedible pens and they suck. They skip, they dry up, they're just unusable. The Iridium nib has made in Germany on it. Stay away from German fountain pens !
@Doodlebud Жыл бұрын
LOL those arent "German Made" pens. Those are super cheap made pens that you can get custom branding on from Alibaba for $4 a piece and have a nib that says Germany on it. To say "stay away from German fountain pens!" is saying that all German fountain pens are terrible. Some of the absolute best manufacturers of fountain pens are German companies. Lamy, Graf Von Faber Castell, Pelikan, Montblanc, Otto Hutt, Diplomat, Kaweco & Rotring are just a few to name and they are all fantastically made pens.
@ericastier1646 Жыл бұрын
@@Doodlebud Ok but the nib is made in Germany not matter what you say and that is bad. No nib made in France is bad, no matter what cheap fountain pen it is part of. Also i thought Montblanc is a French brand. Also don't assume everything German is quality, even some famous brand name car highest most expensive german model like the BMW M3 which i owned from the Factory in Munich are crap in reliability. And that is from a long ownership experience and forum participation specific to that car model.

Is it me? Or is this review weird? It kind of reminds me of Gentlemen Gazette’s reviews. Both of you talk about your pens in a weird manner. Just in the title, you say it’s a perfect « buisness » pen… What even is a buisness pen? What is it supposed to do? Is it supposed to get traded? Like a Pokémon card? What even is a luxurious feeling pen? What even is a luxurious feeling in general?! Does it just feels nice? Like does it massage you like the seats of a « luxurious » Mercedes? I really don’t understand when people talk like that. As if the pen had some kind of feature that you just can’t see. Like what is it? Why is it suited for buisness? What does being suited for buisness even do? Why would I want something buisness friendly? Is it another concept that my autistic peanut of a brain can’t comprehend?
