I've been doing a lot here in the animal room lately. As a result, a few things fell by the wayside. I address some of that in this video by creating new moss and isopod bins. Additionally, many of you have been asking about the status of everything in general. Typically I don't make the content about my personal life and I don't intent to make it the norm, but truthfully it's been rough... let's talk.
Join Me at Animal Con USA (Aug 26-28)
I'll be there for meet and greets and other things next month. If you plan on going, I'll see you there!

As I said in the video, I don't like to make the content about myself and it's definitely not going to become the norm. I appreciate all of your questions and concerns, though, and its seemed appropriate to discuss it this time. Hopefully, this addresses everything. Thanks again and I'm sorry for a “bummer” video this week. I'll be back next Saturday with something awesome, so I'll see you then? Have a great weekend SerpaSquad!

when i was at one of my lowest points after my homemade tank leaked you took the time to write me a long message with words of encouragement and advice, that helped me more than you could ever imagine. you’re an awesome person, your content was therapy to me after i lost a loved one and spent over a year searching for a reason to get out of bed every morning. you’ve been my biggest inspiration as i try to build my own business selling premade scapes and backgrounds, you taught me so many techniques and skills that i probably wouldn’t have figured out on my own. you showed me that it’s not just messing around with rocks and driftwood, it’s a true art form. it’s frustrating and exhausting at times, but the sense of accomplishment as a scape starts coming together can turn a bad day into a great one. you’re basically bob ross to me, and i hope everything starts looking a bit brighter for you very soon. thank you so much for all that you do tanner❤️

As someone who has also severely cut the same finger, I'm a carpenter and cut mine with a mitre saw, after 8 hours of plastic surgery they put it back together and did micro surgery inside for the nerves. it couldn't bend at first but after working extremely hard to get full movement back it worked, it has taken years for the nerves to repair but now its virtually perfect. I found carrying a small squash ball with me at all times and constantly squashing and playing with it really helped speed up my recovery. something to remember ,what doesn't break you , makes you stronger, keep up the excellent work.

@@SerpaDesign suffering an injury that severed nerves and exposed the tendons (cut through the protective sheath of the tendon) taught me a lot about how interconnected all the parts of our body are, and how interconnected we are to everyone and everything else. The depression is a normal and healthy response, too. It's how our brain concretizes the information around what happened so we don't make the same mistake twice. When a friend accidentally cut all 4 fingers on their right hand to the bone, their physical therapist taught them applied kinesiology and how to identify which vitamin and mineral supplements the nerves and tendons needed to heal. Last year, when another friend suffered and injury that shattered some of the smaller bones in between the wrist bones and the pharanges, with extremely extensive nerve and tendon damage, they were told they wouldn't regain sensation or full usage. I shared the information on the applied kinesiology, and which supplements provide the most bioavailable forms of B vitamins (nerve repair), collagen (tendon and bone repair), etc. 9 months later, they have regained full usage of their hand, and only the pinky finger is still struggling to fully constrict. The squeeze ball makes a huge difference in recovery, and maintaining full flexibility and usage. As the depression eases, recovery will speed up. Tanner, your builds and editing have continued to be top notch. I hope you can find it in yourself to be as gentle with yourself as you would be with any of your creatures you take care of, you deserve the same compassion you give them. Be well, and trust your body to know what it needs to heal and get back in balance. You'll be back to full usage in no time. (In case it hasn't been shared with you yet, there is an awesome rubberband exercise that really helps get the tendons, nerves and muscles back in proper communication with one another)

@@SerpaDesign My condolences on your family's losses and I wish you and yours well. You seem really well adjusted, being able to see what the title of an early book of Iyanla Vanzant called, "The Value in the Valley." In life, sometimes you'll be stuck in a valley and you can't find your way out. It feels like all you can do is stumble. But just as you get as low as you can go and start finding your way out, then you have to climb and climb and it's _so_ hard! But there's value in that valley: value that you can only discover and earn by making it through; the way out, once you traverse it, leaves you at the top. Good for you for seeing that! You expressed it so naturally. The way you express it, it seems like it's a lesson that you really feel all the way down to your bones and that it's wisdom you rely on. Remember, you never have to be perfect; just try to spend less time being quite as imperfect as you were before. Studies have shown that listening to affirmations and setting reasonable goals works better than just listening to affirmations, because perfectionism can set in. Be gentle with yourself! But all things considered, you do seem to be doing better-than-average considering, and that's a good place to aim for.

A good supplement for dark-skinned people or people who live in a cloudy climate like myself is vitamin D. Ask your doctor to check your blood levels and you might be surprised at how little you have in your system. For me it led to depression and exhaustion, so if you have a bunch of other things going on it might be a supplement that helps you get more rest and clarity of mind, which will certainly help if you have an injury or a lot of problems going on at the same time. This was not exactly the question that was asked above, but I thought it might be helpful to someone.

Things that should be quick and easy become difficult or impossible and physical therapy feels like trying to push a Cadillac up a hill... with a rope. I appreciate you opening up, and I appreciate you calling it a “difficult season”. Something that really helps me when I’m down, a kind of mantra, is “this too shall pass”, and calling it a season really highlights the impermanence of a lot of these struggles. I’m disabled, and a creative (singing, and I also love dancing, making jewellery/crafts/etc, plants now partly thanks to you!) and I find it incredibly difficult not to be able to do the things I love. I’ve been mostly bedridden/couch ridden for almost 3 years now. I’m in Physio, which will fix a lot of my disabilities, but it’s super hard to find motivation when I can’t do anything I love, and the only way to fix my body is to force my body to do exactly the opposite of what makes it feel good, every single day, but not go too hard or I have a setback. Watching your channel has really added to my life and fills my time since I can’t work, and helped me find a passion for plants, which are something I actually can work on and find some satisfaction with their progress and growth, go outside, care for something outside of myself and get out of my head, and I appreciate that so much. ❤️ I can feel my difficult season ending as I’m able to find the strength to do my Physio with the help of my family, my plants, my pets, my friends, and channels like yours, and I hope yours ends even sooner than mine. I WANT to be busy and accomplishing things, like you, and having these small goals and victories with my exercise and my plants is really helping me get through the Physio. The joy I find when my plants sprout, grow, flower, fruit, is incredibly motivating. I hope your plants and animals can help you get through it too. ❤️

You said it, friend! I don't know what your disability is, but it might be something similar to mine since I had to spend nearly a decade and a half bed bound. Disability is a creative way of living, and if the disability is an acquired one, it comes with a lot of grief and loss. But it can also open doors that you never knew were there. I am doing things now that I never would have considered doing before. It's just a change of direction, and finding novel ways of doing things. At three years into your disability in the degree it is now, you are still very new to it. Life will get better, even though there are still plenty of difficulties ahead. Into every life a little rain must fall. Yet the rain is what allows your garden to grow. Find new things to plant, and watch the garden that is your life grow. Though it may not look like it now, it's an opportunity. It's an opportunity to go in directions you may never have considered going in before. It's finding things that will grow in the shady places. I'm right with you. Before I became disabled I didn't have time to plant anything. Because of the limitations I have with my hands, and having no use at all of my legs, I'm a bit limited regarding what I can grow, But I have big pots under lights in my living room. I've planted it with zucchini which is climbing a trellis which a friend made for me. I have a ginger plant which I've grown from a leftover piece of ginger root from the store which I buried in one of my pots. I was thrilled when the first shoots appeared, and when the first leaves began to come out, and now that the flower stalk is starting to show buds. It's amazing how those little things become so valuable. I even get joy out of watching the trees start to green up in the spring and the amazing way the leaves darken through the summer. I get happiness out of smelling the leaves on the ground in fall. Before I became disabled my life was so busy I didn't have time to appreciate those things. I'm hearing you find joy in the growing of plants too, and that's an incredibly wonderful sign. What a beautiful world we live in. What an amazing place. Our lives are so short that even with the most limiting disabilities we would not have enough time to do all we can and should want even if we had one thousand more years. There will be down days. Grieve the losses, but always keep in mind that there is still so much wonder left. Here's wishing you the best, and thanks for sharing your story. It always helps when you find you're not alone, and also see that others are deriving happiness and joy from some of the same things which make your life better.

Tanner, your heartfelt video about living a creative loving life through troubles brought a tear to my eye. When I was a young single parent working as a commercial artist I fell on my hand while carrying my child. Our combined weight landed on my right palm and I was not be able to hold a pen for what seemed like a long time (luckily just badly bruised but nothing broken). The panic I felt realizing that just one accident to my right hand could make me unemployable in my chosen field was overwhelming. I vowed that day to learn to use my left hand as well as my right so I wouldn't feel that helpless again. I was never able to get my nondominant hand to be as developed as my dominant hand in illustration but I am able to use it in everyday activities without even thinking about it. It was a little act of defiance against the things we will never be able to control, it helped. Thank you for sharing your brilliance with the rest of us. I hope you continue to enjoy exercising your creative ability for a long time to come!

My roomie, Philip, had something similar happen to him during the summer. He mistakenly tried to catch a falling electric hedge trimmer by the blade while it was running. Deep cuts across two fingers that required stitches and he still has sensation issues still. This happened last year. It's been really tough for him because he's an artist. We've also experienced alot of loss lately but definitely vids like this and you talking about your experiences help tremendously. You are not alone either! *hugs* Thank you for all you do!

Thank you Tanner. Your caring and gentle nature come through, even when you’re talking about your hardships you STILL think about everyone around you and following you, whether we’ll be worried or saddened. That is amazing love. Like many here, I do not keep reptiles or fish, but I so enjoy your creativity and your calm, soothing voice and manner, that I follow you faithfully. I have a son a bit younger than you and if he can be half as kind, loving, and nurturing as you are, I would consider it a job well done. You are very loved, Tanner. Peace.

So sorry to hear about how you feel at the moment. Sometimes we only see what’s on the outside, the entertainment and information you provide, and don’t consider what’s behind that. My life came crashing down three years ago and it’s been a long road. But you’re right, it has a time where creativity and imagination comes to the fore. And it does get better. Your content is brilliant, something we check for every day, but I’m sure all your fans will be equally supportive if you do need time to heal too. Take care.

My life also came crashing down within the last year. In the span of 2 months I got divorced and I lost my job. A bit later I had a very bad bout of COVID (my third time, despite being triple vaxxed!) that made me miss my first family Christmas in 2 years. In my loneliest moments, I knew I could always come back to this channel and relax, and feel less alone. I got even closer to my father when we built our first terrarium, inspired by these videos. Now I'm doing much better, and I still come back every video.

My 2021 was by far one of the roughest years I've ever dealt with. Crippling depression, dropping out of med school, my dad's diagnosis and later surgery, as well as my own just 2 months later and multiple family issues, so I completely understand you, Tanner. Like you said, stepping away completely to take care of yourself doesn't look like the most feasible, but no matter what calls you make on this channels content and everything else, you will always have a huge community supporting you. I discovered your channel just 2 months ago and to say your content has made a huge impact on improving my mental health is an understatement. It's only natural to offer you the same as you go through this. Be strong, there will always be brighter and better days. Take care of yourself, Tanner! And all the best on the PT!

I had a very similar injury to my hand, severed two tendons in my left pinky due to some broken glass. Had surgery and like 6 months of physical therapy, the whole nine yards. It was a hard road to recovery and honestly it was very difficult to use my hand the same way as my pinky is still not fully extendable due to the scar tissue. But due to persistence and a little bit of pain I've been able to push past it, I play bass guitar with a handicapped pinky and it's actually currently one of my strongest fingers!

That's very impressive. I need carpal tunnel surgery in both wrists because I am a piano player and used to love going into internet chat rooms. Between the two , the constant repetitive motions has caused some damage over the course of 40yrs. Worst struggle I ever had was when I had physical therapy for a year and a half learning to walk again after having reconstructive surgery on my right foot. I am a licensed Veterinary Technician and when I worked at a Zoo , I got stepped on by a 1,000lbs animal during a difficult labor/delivery. Complications so the humans intervene , shoulder deep pulling out the baby when momma stepped on me. Everyone heard my foot go crunch 4 times . Loved that job , but went back to working in a small animal practice after I was medically cleared for full duties.

Thank you so much for sharing Tanner! Your videos are what got me into isopod keeping! I started by trying to make some of the little jar terrariums, but you mentioned Springtails and you even housed a few wild isopods in one and a lightbulb went off in my head and I said "ISOPODS!!!!" and I have been hooked ever since. I also have an aquarium and I love watching your creative builds for fish, and your outdoor ponds! I'm so sorry you're going through such troubled times right now. As a fellow artist, I know how important our hands and fingers are! Personally, I am dealing with cataracts and some other eye problems right now and I recently realized that I can still do certain things (sewing), relying on my fingers. Our fingers really are extremely sensitive and valuable tools when it comes to creativity. Just keep doing what you do and your body will eventually adapt and you will be able to move past this obstacle. You already are!

I drove to my daughters house, who was out, and not home right then, and so I sat in my car, in her driveway, and cried! On top off all of it, I'm taking meds to get over acute bronchitis right now, and all of them can cause anxiety. Like I need more of that.
