This video shows the parts of this object being made and placed temporarily in a hot oven. After attaching the base to a pontil, the parts are, one at a time, joined using small amounts of molten glass (‘glue bits’). Between about 1500 and 1725, Venice was nearly the sole supplier of fine luxury glass to the royal and aristocratic, the wealthy and powerful, throughout Europe. The Venetian government went to extreme measures to protect its lucrative and prestigious monopoly by isolating the highly skilled workers on the nearby island of Murano and severely restricting their movements. However, with the promise of personal freedom and the hope of fortune, they gradually fled the lagoon to set up workshops in a variety of locations on the Continent and in England.

The technical skills of Bill Gundenrath hurt my head! I can't imagine being that kind of amazing to where I could casually gather a glue bit while reheating the main piece, shape it precisely how I wanted it, then just stick the whole top goblet bowl on with tweezer, nearly perfectly on center. Absolutely insane

I love watching these!! He makes it look so incredibly easy, but you know he's got years of experience behind him. And the glass looks so delicate and beautiful while it's being worked, but then the camera angle changes and you can see the heat shimmer around it, and realize that it's being worked at temperatures that could easily melt a few metals. XD

Oh goodness, I remember binge-watching all of Mr. Gudenrath's videos way back when I saw the one of the Venetian dragon goblets go viral and having a new set of videos is so much fun. Will there ever be a possibility of time lapse videos for other artists? I unfortunately don't have the time of day to watch entire livestreams, these clips are a godsend. Also, from someone who has issues understanding audio, I will forever be grateful for these being captioned. Much love!

This is an incredible work of art and skill. However, it seems a bit tricky to actually... use. The stem doesn't look like a very comfortable or convenient shape to hold onto, and the whole thing seems like it must be fairly fragile.
