Probably the Best Protoss game ever played at least in the sense of "how it should be done". Astrea played perfect positionally, army comps were always absolutely perfect, and the decision making and movement looked transcendental. Serral almost always either blunders when he loses or misreads a situation and dies to an all in when he loses which is almost never. there are literally no examples of Serral getting totally outplayed by a Protoss. Serral wasn't "off" in this game either Serral just got totally outplayed. This really is a very special and beautiful game and It really deserves a long thorough analysis! This is the type of thing that doctors do their dissertations on!

I also thought he was being stubborn not adding vipers into his mix. He had the gas multi times to afford the investment. He’ll adjust as he always done. Good on Astrea for giving him a reckoning to remember.

Vipers might have made a big difference... It's hard to tell because with this many tempest the vipers might just get sniped.

Vipers can't abduct motherships anymore. The trickle down effect of that is that the high templar become way more effective at denying the vipers with feeback. If we were to make the assumption that the toss (astrea) has perfect army control (which he is known to have) the vipers would either die when trying to grab stuff or get feedbacked before they could even get a spell off. MS cloak makes the toss army very safe in a stare down battle and the time warp would stop the vipers from getting out/the zerg army to collapse.

It seems like Serral’s late game is his strongest side. But Zerg can’t go late against Protoss without a big advantage. So Zerg need new strategy

usually toss goes for carrier templars combo and zerg destroys them with viper corruptors. However with recent change to energy overcharge to allow more revelation toss can just max out on tempest that is a supply less, completely negate viper play. you can't go ultra to sweep the archon templar ground either since tempest does burst damage unlike carriers that do no damage against ultra

Lolwat, Zerg had like one Spellcaster, toss had 2 and he had to micro his ass off to pick units one by one, be careful not to step too far forward and won after 10mn of perfect play in the lategame, meanwhile his game could end in 0.1sc if he takes a bad fight

Vipers are not very easy to use against tempests because of the superior range of the tempests and the revelations. You need to commit because tempests weakness is dps, but for that you need enough infestors and corruptors and in this kind of fight vipers are not that useful. Serral was kept on a low economy the whole game. He couldn't reach his ideal army until late game and then he was almost 25K resources behind.

Why can't the mothership cloak field be changed to a sticky spell like oracle revelation? Wouldn't that open up a lot of exciting deception play? The overseer at minute 7 inspired this thought.

It's just calculating over a small time window. Something like #-actions-in-last-5seconds * 12 SC2's current APM counter in the default replay overlay is similar (or maybe exactly the same); but it also shows the average over the whole game.

I have a feeling that the only reason Astrea is winning so hard is because there's not a single Viper produced by Serral. Serral has the tech for both the Vipers and the thing that will kill whatever Viper pulls in (Hydras and Corruptors) and the money for it by the later game, and yet there's never a Viper anywhere. The hell?

I think the pros have come to the conclusion that vipers arent that useful in ZvP anymore. They can be countered by mothership since it can't be abducted. Lambo has talked about the viper/mothership dynamic even before the patch.

@DangerousGazes I'll be happy to hear what Lambo had to say about it. Frankly, I have no idea how mothership counters vipers. It's a big brick with small range that can't be abducted. Who cares? Abduct the tempests and archons instead. It's not like the mothership can stop you from doing that. I mean, sure, it can cloak sometimes - just wait it out or use Fungal or get an overseer nearby (or 40 of them like Rogue in ZvT). The biggest threats to vipers are: 1. tempests, because tempests outrange vipers and 5 tempests will one-shot a viper IIRC. Even if it succeeds with abduct, it's still going to die, effectively making tempest a soft-counter to the viper as well. 2. Templars, because feedback.

@@canna4532 yeeaahhh..... but that doesn't change the fact that Vipers are the standard counter to Protoss big units. Vipers yoinking out Carriers, Tempests, Archons and Colossi into their Hydra/Corruptor fellows has been the standard way for Zerg to dismantle Protoss deathballs for a decade now, with the balancing factor being the economy - does the Protoss have enough economy to sustain replacing the yoinked units and overwhelm the zerg, or will the attrition from the yoinks weaken the deathball enough for the zerg army to overrun it. The way I see it, there is nothing that changed recently that should have disturbed this long-standing balance. The only thing that has changed is that Tempests cost 1 less supply and the Mothership can't be yoinked, but everything else still can. I see no reason why Zerg would suddenly decide that Vipers are useless just because they can't pick off that one support brick in the center of the protoss fleet.

I'm not totally sure it did look incredible from astrea. the 8Minute attack was really good. and at a certain point Serral was visibly tilted. 24:41 z-lot killing infestors... but don't get me wrong I'm no fan of the mass airtoss... though if you want to complain about that you'd need to recognize that nerfing the immortal was a mistake.

Astrea had such a low Immortal count in this game, and Tempests absolutely do not cut it against ultras if they're getting chased down by corruptors. I'm not a Zerg player, and I understand that Immortals and even Stalkers perform excellently against Ultralisks, but High Templar and Archons certainly do not. Neither does the Zealot squad on the other side of the map. Astrea's very mobile artillery and splash damage beat Serral's Lurkers and Brood Lords by being dynamic in a way they just cannot be. Ultralisks are not slow and do not need to siege up not to mention the absolutely godly trade value they could have gotten against this Protoss army when Serral was already working on +3/+3 for the Adrenal Lings.

well ten vipers couldn't get all sniped instantly.... at most 5 would with that comp assuming no overkill and perfect feedbacks. But assuming less than perfect control you trade 3 vipers for about 6 units of your choice in the front...
