Knox Box Key Inspection with the FD

Thanks to the Knox Box, firefighters don't have to go busting though doors to get to a fire or any other emergency as they hold keys to all parts of a building. During the fire inspection, we tested every door we came across to see if they keys in the Knox Box fit and turn. If they don't, it gets typed up in a report for the building to go through and fix.

Former employee of Knox Company, one thing they dont show you here. The "Key" that opens all boxes, on all companies in that Fire jurisdiction... is locked in a device in the Fire Truck... A ten key pad lock is used to release the key. Each Fireman has his own combination.. There is audit trail software on the box, so each time the key is released the time, date, and Fireman's name is noted, recorded. A small town was experiencing a rash of robberies, the police could never find break-in method. Eventually all break-ins were traced back to Knox boxes, and the 'audit trail' software disclosed WHO, and WHEN the key was released... SURPRISE.. it matched all the burglaries.

This is why Fire Fighters used to carry an ax and bolt cutters. They don't have time to look for and fiddle with keys.

They still do the keys are more for situations where an alarm is going off but no visible fire so they can check without damaging property

I used to work at the Knox Co. There make a residential size box too, with a door hanger.. so it sits near the very top of your door. The local fire dept will be able to enter your home in an emergency without busting your doors down. They make various sizes for industrial buildings too. They also make 'gate opener' key lock systems for gated communities or large gated compounds.

@@VoidsDemise5443 The "KEY" to access your box, is the same key that would every box in your community, so no. The only way to get access is to call your local fire department and someone will come by, open the box for you... then you can update the keys inside. Knox also makes larger boxes for several keys and any haz-mat docs you want the Fire Dept to have as they make entry. Talk to your local fire captain. Good Luck, happy new year.

@@VoidsDemise5443 Knox also makes smaller boxes with a door hanger, to the top of your door, like realtors use, these are great for senior citizens on their private residence. in case of emergency entry is needed.

@@cmscms123456 I see. I do think if these knox box medeco locks could have an operator key that's ONLY for that said building that the OWNER can operate, there isn't a problem

@@VoidsDemise5443 I know something about locks and medeco, that would be complicated. Imagine 1,000 business owners in your town, all have Knox boxes, they all have a key to their box... if they lose the key, or sell their business... who is responsible for the 'key'.... The Knox Company is the only place to get a replacement key.. even the Fire Dept must contact Knox for another key..

@S.E.R. Safety - I found this pull station on the internet. Actually a great one you could Review. Seems like a great solution to prevent nuisance alarms in schools and such (much better than a alarm pull station cover) -- www.keycall.co/ , simply, you put a door cylinder that belongs to the school into the pull station (euro cylinder) and then Only school staff can use the pull station in an emergency (they just use the same key that is used for doors). I do not however know if the key turning action is "fast enough" in an emergency to be up to code, but it should be as it equvalient with a lift cover-lift flap-pull station.

Because the key does not work Picture this : there is a fire and firefighters need to access something with the keys in the box, but the key doesn’t work so their stuck out side with no way to get in that’s not up to code

Cool!!! The government has complete access to your building! No warrant required! That's awesome! What happens if a fireman "loses" a key? Do you re-key every single Knox box in the city, or do you just cross your fingers and hope no one knows what it is? Do you do background checks on every firefighter to make sure they aren't going to break into my business at 3 AM and steal $20K of product?

It’s a controlled key that logs each time they remove from their own lock box in fire truck Only dire has them and you should have an alarm which will go off if used and you know it’s been used Also cops yawing key makes anything they find unabmissible They could pick locks or just bust down door

This is super unwise. Keys are trivial to copy with such crystal clear imagery of their cuts. Don't pixelate the faces, pixelate the keys!

How would you know what building these keys are to? It’s the same thing to say to the world you know someone’s phone password is 1423. Though that information is now public, you would have to search millions of phones the find the one with that code. Same thing applies here. All information about the building and its location was censored. You don’t know if this was a building in North Carolina or California.

Some of the keys that you see will have 'do not duplicate' imprinted on them; if you see these on fire alarm enthusiasts' channels like this one, assume that those cannot be duplicated unless otherwise stated.
