Great video Pete! Roddicks serve is definitely one of the hardest motions to copy as its so unique. The hardest part of the motion to copy and get right is his trophy pose and timing of the leg drive. His trophy pose is totally different to all other players as his racket isn't vertical when he drives his legs.His hitting arm is pointing out to his side when drives his legs which is the reason why he hits his serve so hard because his racket arm is playing catchup with the rest of his body and hence has nore range to accelerate the racket explosively. He is also the only player I have seen where his legs initiate the entire serve motion. This is why he has such a fast arm because his racket is accelerating explosively from his trophy pose. If you want to beable to copy Roddicks motion and do it properly you need a very flexible and strong shoulder; a flexible thoracic spine and an incredibly explosive leg and trunk drive. Most professional players would struggle to pull this motion off. Trully the most unique service and one off serve motion the game has ever seen. Only other player who has a similar motion and mechanice is Sam Groth who hits it even harder...Scary thought...

Pulling the elbow down definitely makes a BIG difference in the resulting acceleration and power. With almost no effort I'm able to punch a lot of power. Controlling it is just a matter of repetition, training, training and training... Best tip ever!

On the tossing arm he flattens his hand & sees the ball to the left if his hand. This forces a bow action.

sick video, better than most people. i think one of the biggest part missed is when the racquet head drops than how he releases up with the pronation.

GREAT VIDEO Peter - good attempt... 2things I realized thanks to your video, that Andy does different then many others : he FIRST raises his arms almost perfectly in snyc, very close to his chest - then in "phase 2": he "only goes down and rockets up" - SECONDLY - his arms in his shoulder are already in position very early... so no wild arm rotation before reaching his power position, the movement comes from bending and twisting his trunk/spine/hip/knees .... he positions almost both his upper arms at start and then initiates with his body the shot. so completely different then what many others do ... this separation I like a lot - because it is easier to coordinate than down while opening arms, rotating and so on... ... (for low recreational players...) His shoulder flexibility was legendary - so his range of motion I will never see - so speed - meh ...

I think you did really great trying to do Andy's serve. His service starting motion is so abbreviated compared to Roger's , going straight to the secret source without the wind-up with the racquet. I never realized how low he got when watching him play. great slo mo there!, that knee-bend is crazy and the little bounce down before coming through, I get how that could really juice the serve power.

man im only two minutes into this video and you already touched on of the things ive been noticing trying to clone this guy serve. There is just something about his toss and the his movement into his coil position that is really really hard to mimick on your own without someone helping you. ive been taking my raquet to the gym and practicing in the mirror. Its very awkward, and the trophy arm movment feels very different all bent backwards n shit. this is good so far.

I think he brings that throwing arm back like that to stretch the fascia on his side and use the rubber band effect to drive the rotation of his shoulders. The shoulder on the throwing side gets pulled down with more speed causing the shoulder on the hitting side to launch up.

I crushed that serve!!! It nearly made it to the fence before bouncing!

Great series. Looking forward to the Sampras series. One of the things I see that is similar in both Roddick and Sampras is how low the elbow is relatively late in the whole motion. And both of them have fairly extreme shoulder tilt. They get into that position very differently but something about that low position late in the motion helps generate racquet head speed. You bend your knees really well on that serve. That is very hard to do and maintain anything resembling body control. The only thing I would point out there is Roddick has his knees and hips fairly radically pointed shifted into the court. Your rear knee was pointed back a bit. That relates to setting up for more rotational torque. You'd get still more pop if you imitated Roddick's forward aspect in knees and hips.

Very cool, loved your comment into the camera. lol This is so different with a down and up motion versus the rounded approach. Keep going, love it.

Very interesting! Another thing - see how low his racquet hand goes - down to his waist! If I did that, the ball would be on the ground before I got the racquet head high enough to hit it.

pretty good first attempt at cloning Andy... The series is a fantastic idea, and your execution is really good too. .. now if only you'd use the proper arm you'd really have something....

Roddick's serve is worth cloning, whether fully or partially.
@kevinbrowne92986 жыл бұрын
Roddick's initial arms motion somewhat resembles the great Pancho Gonzales. Next, his legs definitely generate lots of upward force, transferring power to the top of the stroke. interesting how much he's on the balls of his feet which probably helps with the deep knee bend & his overarching left arm.

Could you explain why this technique is not use it on the Pro-Tournaments... why the pros (woman and men) prefer to use the long back and down movement of the racket to bring it to the trophy position instead of just a short movement using the elbow as a driver... Thanks for your video very interesting!

I actually started playing tennis as a kid with roddick as my favourite so I've always had his serve, this helped me tweak some things I was missing a bit like how low he brings his arm and I usually tossed the ball out front more than too the side

Kudos for trying to copy the pros. Most coaches just talk the talk and make up bullshit excuses like "everyone is so unique that even trying to copy a pro as close as possible is pointless". Would love to see a Sampras, I've been experimenting with that for quite a while.
@PeterFreemantennis6 жыл бұрын
thanks mate!!! Sampras most like next...I can get some elements to work...but also trying to get every move of a Roddick or Sampras is difficult because they are just such better athletes than me and at the time were a lot younger lol...but what I love about doing this is finding little golden nuggets that work for me so I can figure out how to find extra juice on my own personal serve...this is pretty fun!!!
@nazmulazad87933 жыл бұрын
Blindly cloning like a “ monkey see monkey do” won’t fetch the monsterous serve of Andy Roddick..Understanding the fundamental mechanics of serve is more important which will help clone any professional player serve you like..

I would never do this. Each person is different.

nope. holding the ball against the racket, he tosses the ball AND the racket up with his left hand. his right wrist is completely limp. that's the secret.

It’s a weird serve. Why would anyone want to copy that serve unless you are as strong as Roddick and have that weird serve already n
@isaiahjohn87035 жыл бұрын
Andy looks shorter than you, and he serves using his legs, bending, and accelerating as his weapon for a powerful serve. His serve is abbreviated for a fast, disguised serve, which opponent could only blink and not react timely.
