I manage servers for a living and you may want to consider changing up your cable management practices. You want every single piece of equipment in your rack to be able to come out without disrupting the equipment around it. Direct runs of cabling across the back/front aren't generally a gold idea, even if the piece of equipment is directly above or below. It may seem silly, but it really is a best practice. To those questioning why he didn't use a 1U kvm solution, he is clearly trying to preserve as much rack space as possible. I do prefer the slide out 1U kvm, but in this case it's acceptable and makes sense to have it mounted to the wall. You all must understand that Linus and crew are not used to the data center environment and must learn lessons as they go.

Linus, I have so many comments for this video. I really hope I capture all my thoughts clearly here. Also I hope you actually read this however unlikely that is. 1: I do Network infrastructure for a living and I desperately want to come and cable manage that rack. :) 2: You should really get rid of those power strips and get rack mounted power. it will really help with cable management and they have built in amps for added protection. 3: you should rack mount the KVM and put the keyboard tray and monitor on the wall behind the rack(where you do most of your work) and away from the door. I think that about sums it all up. Wasn't nearly as much as I though it was. Also your little orange screw driver is not a power tool..... they lied to you.

Keeps it all nicely in the rack and easily switchable. Some console switches even have UTP so you can manage the servers while at your desk.

Sorry Linus... Cable Management!!! A couple pointers:1) Cables on the floor? YIKES!!! Tripping Hazard and vulnerable to damage. Suspend them, put them in Panduit, something... Just not on the floor where people can trip on them! CAT 5/6 is EASY to terminate. Writing paperwork for an injured employee is not.2) Turn your network gear around, mount it port-side on the back of the cabinet instead of the front of cabinet (most racks support mounting equipment on either side). This will make it much cleaner when you are combining network gear and server gear in the same rack. It also makes it much easier to connect everything else inside the cabinet, trace out connections, etc.3) Rack power strips and shorter power supply cords. (1 to 3 ft) No drooping / looping cords.

From personal experience at work and at home, ConnectPro is a good middle ground for something that isn't going to break your wallet, and something that won't break in a week. I've been running a UR-14 for the past 3 years in my office and I have yet to have it break. Raritan is great, if you have the cash. Expect to pay upwards of like $1500 to $3000 depending on what you need from it, since they mostly reside in big data centers. Startech is definitely on the cheap side, and you certainly get what you pay for (I've dealt with about 2 broken switches so far), but if you get a good one, it'll last forever. I'd like to see Linus going over this as well, since most people aren't gonna have the room for 4 monitors for 4 different machines :)
@Megalomaniakaal8 жыл бұрын
Forrest Hooker Hmm, the Startech 2 PC usb/displayport SV231DPU2 looks pretty good on paper and in price. What's the issue with the quality, stops working just from use over time, or more an issue of breaking as a result of a small fall and/or soft-ish hit? How's the warranty/support for RMA?
@IsolationIndex8 жыл бұрын
Felix Kütt I've never been truly able to diagnose why the last two I had died, but the symptoms were a mix of a complete lack of response from any of the buttons, USB devices that were previously working becoming unrecognizable, or the thing simply being bricked. For awhile, I thought I was somehow overvolting them, but the Startech of the same model I purchased later (can't remember the model, it's been sitting in a test lab for awhile now) has been going strong for close to a year now with the same model of power supply included. Regarding warranty, they were quick to replace the first one that died, but on the second attempt I gave up out of frustration and gave it to a coworker in the hopes that he'd salvage something out of it :p
@Megalomaniakaal8 жыл бұрын
Forrest Hooker Hard to tell for sure based on a basic description but could the cables have been damaged from say bending? The one sample in the lab going strong perhaps hasn't gotten as much cable abuse? OTOH perhaps their quality actually improved once they figured out what was causing the issue, or it really is just luck of the draw. Anyway if I ever feel adventurous enough I guess it might be worth giving them a chance.

Here is an idea that you may or may not already know, but regular Dryer Sheets work great for filters and lightly scented ones move a bit of scent as well. I use them on the outside of Fan Inlets and they do a great job removing about 90% of dust while almost no hindering to air flow and the end result is cleaner fans and fan ports for longer periods. Granted they look a bit ghetto but they are easily trimmed to fit almost any configuration and they are cheap, very cheap. I noticed your SSD inlets are full of dust and this would be a viable solution to keeping those inlets clear. Replacing them is as easy as removing the old and replacing with the new and perhaps a bit of Blue or Green Painters tape to keep adhesive from sticking to the plastic or metal parts. Dryer Sheets work well as mini dust filters and are easily replaced. Enjoy...

+MarZ Greg If I understand it a little, this means wired just goes faster right?

+MarZ Greg Way wrong. Remoting into a box is much easier from an office than it is to walk to the room. How about configuring or troubleshooting several boxes at the same time? Way easier to do from an desk. How about configuring something you're not completely familiar with? Remoting into the box allows research to be done more efficiently. Do you think data center operaters walk around to each box and types at a console? No, no one does. Big boys and girls remote into everything, there's only one reason not to, and that's if you can't establish a connection. Also, don't be so rude to people who might ask questions. They're asking because they don't know. It's pretty clear that you've not known at least one thing in the last 30 minutes.

Is he trolling actual admins? I mean... Airflow control, dust handling... He had to do a wall mount KVM/keyboard and monitor instead of an in rack solution? He had to take down the servers?! As far as the studs behind that keyboard tray, you likely have a "shear" wall there. It's basically an entire layer of plywood behind the drywall, effectively giving you an entire wall of "stud." Some key tips: 1. You're going to want to label all those cables. Makes it a lot easier to conduct updates and troubleshoot issues. 2. I think it would be more beneficial to change out the old cisco router for a new one or some other sort of enterprise grade system such as HP procurve. Yeah it will be a pain to configure if you're not that knowledgeable but it would support better scaling in the future. 3. Look into server visualization in the future. As you expand it may be beneficial to set up a system with blade servers.

There are good cases to use both Linux or windows and the reasons for using either are pretty good, personally I use both on our servers, some of them are linux as it's the best solution, some of them are windows as that's the best solution. The whole Linux works better idea is very outdated and anyone who has got the best interests of the company they work for in mind would look at all options and pick the one that suits the needs best.

please dont go into construction....please would also recommend that you put a 1RU space between devices, it helps with cooling would also recommend that you colour code the patch wiring and label the cables, as well as a 1RU space between the pach racks and the switches

***** I am terribly sorry for my comments grammar. You see I wrote this on a school computer with a broken keyboard while in rush so the teacher would not see me. I would never make such mistakes when typing. I will now read the dictonary 100 times to forgive my sin.

Great video. Cable management, i know how that goes since I worked in a casino\hotel. Nothing like 8 48port switches and trying to cable manage that all in 1 rack except we would have 4 racks I think on levels 2,5,9, 14(which was actually 13 but they won't label it that.) I would like to know if you specifically specced out the wall outlets on how much voltage is needed and if what looks to be 4 sockets on different breakers. For some reason contractors love putting it all on one breaker and we had a hell of a time getting it separated.

Sorry, I think I misheard... around 14:00, he did say 1000 up and 1000 down, I assumed he was talking about the actual internet speed.

You brought back bad memories. I had a building I was brought into during design and the wiring closet/server room was spec'ed like yours with passive cooling exactly the same with a fan blowing out "skimming the hot air off the top" causing negative pressure in the room. I protested that this was not proper for a wiring closet. I demanded a filtered pressure but lost the fight because $$. Every year after build I was replacing hardware due to failure from dust buildup. Years later decent $$ investment to convert to filtered pressure and problem solved. Reverse the fan so if blows in and add a filter. Putting a filter on the passive breather wont fix your dust problems. Like electricity, air will find the path of least resistance and the dust will come from the cracks and gaps from elsewhere.

Next time visit a data center first for some ideas on how to do what you are doing...i know its a "small business" but you must have some friends at Microsoft, Facebook..google ;-) some parts hard to watch..Grits teeth ;-)

Nice to see your leveling everything. It's very important. The last thing you want to do is cause your system stress by making the data and electricity run up hill. You also have a problem if you have a power outage and all that data leaks back out. I really hate sweeping it all up off the floor and putting those 1's and 0's back in order.
@lukeg7799 жыл бұрын
You really need to put on those side panels on ASAP because they provide crucial rigidity and with slight force on one of the pillars will topple the whole cabinet. Another thing is that the UPS is the most heaviest part of the server and should always be at the bottom due to the weight of the batteries.
@rsethc7 жыл бұрын
There is something awesome and satisfying about the concept of a small business filling up an entire cabinet with all that stuff.
@theoneyoudontsee83158 жыл бұрын
if you change the hinges on the door way so the server room door opens out of the room instead of opening into the room you can put the other rack front to back instead of side by side.

Why not mount the KVM switch on the back of the rack? Or move the switch to the back and put the KVM in its place?

+LinusTechTips I'm taking Computer Information Systems Administration at BCIT currently, on my second year, will be completing in June. I work extensively in class with Cisco Routers and Switches, and am familiar with the Cisco IOS. I'm no expert, and still only a student, but i'm sure i could lend a hand.

I see they do cable management to their rack much like they do to their pc builds :) I know it's been a year, but has there been any work done on the rack since?
@realzyxtomatic9 жыл бұрын
You don't have to close up the sides on that rack unless you're going to have a "cold side" (the front) and "hot side" (the back) like a datacenter has. In your small room it looks like you have no air flow control like a datacenter, so closing up the rack doesn't help with anything except aesthetics.
@AceKilla089 жыл бұрын
Rack kvm please !! It's only a 1u for the monitor maybe 2u with monitor and device for all the servers !
@JCJC6509 жыл бұрын
Would you go for a standard filter on the room intake or would you go for something more like a car air filter that is designed for maximum airflow and filtration by use of extra surface area? If going for the standard filter you'd be better off mounting it on the outside so you could vacuum the dust of easily.
