Down to earth, "to-the-point", invaluable insight to effortlessly deploy a cloud based Unifi system. A huge thank-you from Italy.

Great tutorial. Just adopted remote USG under my primary controller. No problems at all.

This was an awesome video. I have a little Unifi experience but this was a great walk through when I needed to set up a USG for a second site today! Thank you!

Hi, Great videos, hoping for more. Question: what is the purpose of a USG. Specially if Unifi is sitting behind 2 EdgeRouters and already firewall protected? My Unifi devices are getting DHCP from the device setup in front as a router. How do I get Unifi to manage the network like you are showing it on your video? A USG would have to be put in place for that I assume as it will act as the router? Thanks
@ServersideupNet5 жыл бұрын
USG routers are basically Edge Routers with extra software that allows them to be managed by the UniFi controller. If you want the full UniFi experience (where you can manage everything from your cell phone), go with the USG.

How do you update when you have a working system?
@gojdff5 жыл бұрын
If you have multi-sites under the controller how does the device know what site to inform? All you gave it was the controllers IP... Also, what about if you not using a USG router, what would be the process to join the AP to the cloud controller? Thank you for the video, it's very informative.

- Multiple sites: It is wherever you click "Adopt" for the site. More here: help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/204952174-UniFi-Configuring-Multiple-Sites - Not using a USG: Use DHCP Option #43 on your DHCP server to point your devices to your controller. I wrote an article how to do this with MikroTik here: serversideup.net/automatic-controller-assignment-unifi-dhcp-option-43-mikrotik-routers/

This video was absolutely useful for me first time trying to do this. I hate these Unifi devices ... maybe one day I will come around to liking them. I noticed their 8-port switches get super hot ... don't think that's very good for the long-term life of them.

Nice video, very useful. For the controller dhcp option can you use a FQDN instead of its public ip?
@ServersideupNet5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! You'll definitely need (and want) to use the static IP address of your controller. Not only is it a technical requirement for how it generates the DHCP Option, but you also do not need to rely on a functioning DNS server for communicating to your devices. And we all know how much a pain in the butt DNS can be :-) If you ever need to change IPs or migrate your controller to a new server, UniFi has some pretty sweet and painless migration options help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/115002869188-UniFi-Migrating-Sites-with-Site-Export-Wizard

I don’t have an IP address for my controller it just says local host in the url can you use “localhost” in the inform url?
@ServersideupNet5 жыл бұрын
Localhost is your own computer (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Localhost). If you are new to networking, I would advise getting a Cloud Key to run your first controller: amzn.to/2JuAuAv Running a Linux server may take some background knowledge in order to get everything set up correctly. Take it one step at a time! 😀

I do it exactly the same way (change subnet/gateway), but when it comes to release/renew IP everything works fine (got IP from new range, internet works) but USG is disconnected in Controller. Any tip? Thanks for your tutorial :)

Make sure your inform URL is configured correctly and that your firewall ports are configured correctly. If you can validate the ports are open and accessible, you can re-set the Inform URL via SSH: help.ubnt.com/hc/en-us/articles/204909754-UniFi-Device-Adoption-Methods-for-Remote-UniFi-Controllers#8 Make sure you are *USING THE IP ADDRESS* (not any DNS names), otherwise you will have issues.

@@ServersideupNet Thank you for leading the way :) It looks like that Windows Defender was blocking the port. Adding controller port 8443 to rules wasn't enough because USG was still disconnected. When I turned Defender off, USG appeared as connected.

6:52 [question] what if "inform URL" has IP address in that same range of LAN IP address what you just seconds ago created (and I just need to replace regular router for USG) - btw. controller is running on "local server" which will go down (IP 192.168.1.1XX)? if I unplug regular router do to switching to USG! - OH YEAH | This is one of the best if not the BEST STEP-BY-STEP SETUP 🙏 I could stumbleupon | you are pure savier 😁for the church😎 my unknown acquaintance 🤝
@ServersideupNet5 жыл бұрын
Your controller can be hosted on your own LAN, that is completely fine! Plug in an unmanaged switch for your setup so you can plug in your computer, your USG server (controller). This will allow you to at least get it adopted and ready for programming 😎

**** or.. you can edit "inform" via SSH direct in your network with SSH login, each equipment individually

how is this secure if every device plugged in already has access to your network.
@ServersideupNet5 жыл бұрын
You have to login to your controller and press "Adopt" before it joins your network. It just automatically points to your controller on boot (saving you a ton of configuration time).
