I would also do a food test where you give them food and then observe the reaction when you take it away or interfere with their eating. You're checking to make sure they are too possessive or protective of their food. No aggression should be shown.

DavidRomeRecording For a personal pet thats not always a deal breaker... I broke my pup (gsd)of that very early on with a bit of practice. She wasnt overly aggressive to begin with, but began making grumbling sounds and I nipped that in the bud (with patience, not violence). Lots and lots of petting and touching her face while she was eating and IF shed growl, I’d put the food up and wouldnt put it back until I had her attention and we’d start all over again- constant touching playing with the dog food, petting her muzzle, etc. The idea was that if there ever were kids around Id want to know she wouldnt react to a toddler playing in her bowl. She quickly realized that if she wanted to eat, any aggression wasn’t allowed -and now she’s 12 years old and the most PATIENT dog during meal time and in general. Now: I don’t think this method will work for everyone- I cant know that. Just that minor food aggression CAN be worked on at a young age, and was successful for me,is all I’m saying. I do realize this is a video for service animals though.

If you think about it as the leader you shouldn't be taking food out of the predisposed that's for you dish, becouse leaders in wolf packs don't do such so why should a dog never expect there food to be taken or be expected not to be upset or growl when it does? edit: i was saying that its wrong to do it in the first place, i 100% wouldn't doubt a dog for being aggressive when THEIR food is taken or played with, but the idea is that its YOUR FOOD not theirs and your done with the food and that is when they get it after your done, they get to eat, its not their food in the first place, its your scraps and if you want it back you can take it back

@@-touya_todorokiAlpha theory has been debunked long ago, and debunked by the person who first proposed it. There is no “leader of the pack”.

@@crittersandcreatures incorrect, the guy who did it admitted to a flawed research group, her put a bunch of unknown wolfs into a "pack" and recorded a not real pack, stating that debunks what he was trying to see how wolfs have families ext and how these families work, however in contrast the opposite is shown how the alpha theory applies when you put a bunch of animals into a "pack" that may or may not be related or remember each other, its insanely hard to create an actual PACK of dogs you can only have one male and female you cannot let them breed unless you increase food AND YOU CANT introduce new puppies that don't look like you the human (impossible to do) otherwise it creates a non family based "alpha" ranking pack because the animals have to come up with a heirghrocky, further more ask any dog daycare person and they will say yes some dogs are more dominant then others this creating the alpha "theory" you say, the whole idea of alpha, dominance ext is that YOU lead the dog to be the best they can be and no one way works for EVERY SINGLE dog because there is no one way for any animal, no horse fights the same as another horse, no dog fights or acts the same as another dog, no wolf or act responds the same to the same stimulus, if positive only worked FOR EVERY ANIMAL AND INDIVUDUAL disregarding how they will respond to it, then we would have alot less aggressive dogs horses wolf dogs you name it, but we don't? WHY? because POSTIVE ONLY and alpha theory ARE NOT the only methods or ideas case in close here you lack basic knowledge and function of what putting a bunch of animals into a altered pack mentality creates and lack knowing that one method wont work FOR EVERY individual and yes im bad at typing shut up and correct it yourself in your head i tried to make it as good as i could

Hello, my name is Frances I trained my first service dog a few years ago, but I have never service tested my first service dog, though she is nearing retirement so I am looking for a new one and I thank you for making a video to help handlers figure this out.

That’s actually not how you’re meant to do it, you’re mean to press very lightly on the webbing, increasing pressure until the puppy displays discomfort. Not pain.

make sure you test to see if they are food motivated, if they arent food motivated training will be a lot harder

I wanted to adopt a this super mellow pup but she was shaking and fearful when the person did the Volhard temperament test. The breeder told me the pup was intelligent, cuddly and , friendly but she does scare if she hears a siren, I was told she would out grow fearfulness . Told by a trainer that fearfulness is not a good sign and it could be genetic predisposition and lead to a biting dog later if the dog isn't able to get over the fear .and that pup cannot be therapy dog.

I’m training a 3 year old yorki to be a PSDIT! But he’s never even played fetch it’s never been his thing lol I’ve honestly never had a dog that would fetch for me. I’ve had odd dogs.

Most dogs won't fetch. Usually retriever breeds, hunting breeds and livestock dogs are the only ones that will. I have an Aussie that loves fetching for hours, and I have a Greyhound/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix that just stares at me like I'm an idiot when I throw the toy. My first service dog would chase the toy, but never bring it back or pick it up. Dogs are odd little guys! The fetching part isn't necessary unless you need a dog to pick something up for you, but since a Yorkie is so small, they won't help much.
