They were all super different with aspects I appreciated. The WAVs sounded way different than the compressed KZbin versions. Simon's mix had fire width, and I liked the bassline in section 2, but the kick was clipping too hard and felt over-limited. Dawson had a clean vocal approach; the dubs were too loud, but the lead was fire, with a pro-level crispness on the top end. We dropped 'Time's Gone' with a different mix we worked hard on, but now a Grammy-winning mixer wants to redo it for us. Hopefully, his mix will be the one, and we'll redrop it soon

@Dkejejej-h5d4 ай бұрын
Agree! I found his mix better. But I still think #3 won this one because his style seems to be much more well suited for this genre (much more high ends). I think Simon would have a better shot if the track was Hip-Hop & Rnb (Since, his mixing are bass heavy). Otherwise, both were good.

if you do this again, you should allow a bit more time. In my opinion, the difference between the 3 tiers would be a lot more noticeable. A seasoned engineer can get a 70% the way there very quickly, but its that last 30% that really shows the value of running a mix through someone with experience. That 30% just comes with time.

Akin to what the expert mixing engineer said, I add to that "A good master can't fix a bad mix, A good mix can't fix a bad production." So if the producer/singer-songwriter gives you crap, you as a mixing engineer can only do your best to sound it your way, but that doesn't change the fact that the track is still crap. Bottom line: Production is your base, your foundation in making good music. So, sing the best verse, play your best lick, try to be on time, retake a thousand times, hit the drums with groove and feel, derail and don't limit yourself with what's with the norm. Great music is often made by breaking the rules. FLOW, DON'T FORCE.

Creatively Simons was good. But Dawson def mixed it much better to fit its song genre. Vocals were inside the pocket and every word was clearly understood. Simon was more creative but that is not what qualifies a mastering engineer. I have to agree with the expert, the kick and low end were overwhelming the vocals and melodic elements. Mixing wise Simons creativity was best and the experts knowledge of the mastering and leveling would likely make for the cleanest and most interesting finished product.

Simon's mix was the best because he controlled dynamics a lot better. the 3rd engineer spent the most time on levelling and mixing but it ended up sounding a little more dull and soft, meanwhile simon's mix sounded wide and full and the drums hit (because of the clipping, which I actually quite liked.)
