It’s also really important to follow through with your hit, similar to when you throw a baseball. When you throw a ball, your arm continues with the swing after the ball has left your hand and stops around your hips. The same thing should happen when you hit a volleyball - it will give you a lot more power in your serve.

I don't own a volleyball, but my mom can't afford to buy me one. I have a bouncy ball, but it's a lot different :/ What should I do?

Use the bouncy ball,use what ever is about the size of a volleyball. As long as you can get practice in its good.

I'm curious why you would teach a beginner the overhand serve?

because everybody on a volleyball team has to know how to overhand toss if you don't know how then there is a chance your not going to make the team, because when it's your turn to serve you have to make it over the net or they probably won't let you play anymore games so that why

The motion has some similarities to hitting. So it's sort of like muscles memory. If they get used to the over hand serve it aids in learning to spike and also learning a jump serve

Same reason you teach a beginner baseball player to throw overhand instead of underhand. The earlier you have a player develop muscle memory, the more natural it will be for them to perform the skill as they get older.
