According to the World Bank, each year, Nigeria loses and wastes 40% of its total food production. This is equal to 31% of its total land use.
At the global level, the Food and Agriculture Organisation estimates that 14 per cent of the world's food, valued at $400 billion is lost annually between harvest and the retail market.
Smallholder farmers are significantly affected as they lack cold storage facilities to keep their food fresh until it gets to the final consumers. This in turn impacts food security and increases malnutrition.
