Oscar was orange for the first season. Then he went on vacation to Swamp Mushy Muddy and came back green. Oscar originally wasnt supposed to be green or orange(they have sketches from 1969 of original Oscar). Oscar was supposed to be Magenta but because the TV back then couldnt handle the color very well he became an Orange Oscar instead.

if i am not mistaken, oscar was originally that color and then they changed him green for the show later. he wasn't meant to be an original cast character, hence the orange color.

back in the very very first season of Sesame Street, Oscar was actually orange and not green...after quite some time living in a trash can and not bathing, enough moss and mould built up on Oscar, he became green!

I like to think when grouches reach a certain age their hair starts falling out and when it grows back it gets more sensitive to dirt and trash and it turns their fur permanently green

I watched it on a black and white tv. I absolutely loved the count. 1970 was a great year for new kids shows. They also made a Canadian version, I thought it was a flop. Maybe brown bear and girl were there. My absolute favourite was the count because he wasn’t on very often second was big bird.

I think he was originally a background character in 1979, not really as popular as say, Bert and Ernie or Big Bird or even Oscar the Grouch or Grover. But then in 1980, he made his debut as more so a main character, being voiced by Kevin Clash.
