I got to meet Dave in October of this year. Super nice guy. He took time out of his lunch break to play puzzles with my kids while my wife and I browsed the selection of prints. Afterwards he posed for pictures and answered all my questions. Again, incredibly nice and accommodating person. Can’t wait to go back.

I have to say how refreshing it has been to follow someone as passionate as Dave at Mokuhankan for the last few years. Speaking as someone who grew disillusioned with a career in art, Dave's knowledge and the fire of his love for Japanese woodblock prints is just inspiring. So glad 2024 was a huge year for the shop.
@BarbaraE-q1t22 күн бұрын
Ah yes, disillustionment in the biz of art, I know it well. Loved designing, carving, printing woodblocks, not so much the grind of sales or locked into "what sells" rather than freedom to explore own artistic path. Dave is truly an inspiration for a return to this work I love, without making it a business.

Why do I feel proud of an organization on the other side of the world? Historical creations being made, families being expanded, and... bellies being grown, all filling me with a pride about such an open, driven man creating something grand with those around him. Thank you for sharing this journey with us across the world!

This comment hit the nail on the head for me! I have never met Dave, or anyone else who works at Mokuhankan. I have no personal stake in the business doing well and yet I feel such a huge sense of pride and joy when I see these updates at the end of every year and learn of how well the business is doing - and how well the people who work there are thriving! I hope nothing but good things for Dave and all the team at Mokuhankan 😃

I'm going to be visiting Tokyo on my own in June 2025 and at the very top of my list is visiting Mokuhankan. I've been an avid follower of your KZbin content for a little while now and I'm not ashamed to say that your business and videos are a big reason why I decided to visit Tokyo. I'm learning Japanese and very much looking forward to immersing myself in the culture and experiences that Japan has to offer. Thank you for everything you do - for us and for your team.

Gosh I love these update videos. Mokuhankan is such a comforting old soul in our age of fast production. Seeing all the ways in which the business has grown, changed, and struggled; it's such an encouragement to see that even a business I admire goes through confusing troubles much like myself! And to survive and thrive in what everyone once believed was an obsolete, slowly fading art is the best way to prove the world wrong. In a way that's helped me pursue my dreams, because if Dave and his staff can make it happen in one of the most hardworking/difficult periods of growth I've ever seen, then we all can try our best too. Thank you Dave & Mokuhankan! Much love from your hometown of Vancouver.

I feel the public has not been sufficiently warned about the dangers of watching David Bull's channel. I used to think I was safe. I've been watching since the first ukiyo-e heroes days, and never felt any interest in buying anything. "Sure," I though, "it's all very wonderful, the prints look very nice, it's great that Dave is keeping the craft alive, it's good that people are willing to pay for it, but me, buying any of it? Why would I want to? Looking at it through my monitor is more than good enough for me." Years passed. One night I had a dream that I was opening a package from Dave filled with prints and I was feeling intensely happy. I woke up. The first thing I felt was disappointment that the prints were a dream, the package wasn't coming. Then I immediately crawled to my computer, googled "Mokuhankan" and started ordering. I'm now $1500 poorer. Also, covered in prints. Think not yourself safe! I thought I was, and yet... You never know when you break. Stay safe.

Thanks for the update Dave. We had the pleasure of a brief chat (I felt so guilty interrupting you) back in April and we came away with three prints that are now framed and hanging in our home, one of which (Sparrow and Peony) became very special to us in particular as a few weeks after returning from Japan we found out my wifes mother had terminal cancer and a few weeks later she passed, she was a keen bird watcher and lover of nature and really liked the print when we showed it to her. Hearing about your own journey as well through that and thankfully a happier ending for yourself at least confirms that there is right in the world, and you deserve many more years of it. Thank you to yourself and all the staff at Mokuhankan!

If I ever make it to Japan I’ll be sure to stop by. Flying to Seoul this summer I watched the flight path on the screen as we passed directly over Tokyo and I wished I could take a quick stop just 30,000 feet below. I think what is both frustrating as someone who wants easier access to your prints but also inspiring as someone who feels like the hyper growth-driven business mentality takes the soul out of so much of what we do in society is how you’re content to maintain a business that supports its employees and keeps this art alive. You know I almost was waiting for you to explain that you’re buying a warehouse to multiply production by 10x. But instead you’re just thankful to be doing what you’re doing with the people you’re doing it with. Quite a refreshing and inspiring shape for ambition to take.

Well, at an overall social level, the situation is a _lot_ more complicated. Without growth as a 'thing', we would basically still be swinging in the trees. The global challenge facing us now of course, is to try and structure a society where growth vs resources can be balanced and managed. Might actually not be possible ...
@CyberMaddenus20 күн бұрын
@@seseragistudio Growth for the sake of "growth is good" puts humans on a par with any other animal that will multiply and when the resources cannot support them or diseases get out of control will die off. Unfortunately many people are stuck on a book that was written by men that put together nearly 2000 years ago that says, "Be fruitful and multiply." Great advice back then, not so good now.
