Hyundai mechanic replaces rear brakes on a 2011-2014 Hyundai Sonata WITHOUT removing control arm!!

Compressing the caliper I have always used an old disc pad and a 6” C-clamp. Perfect.

What was Hyundai thinking. So I have the 2013 sonata gl And I did the rear brakes. And came across this problem. I eventually figured it out and did it exactly how you did. It took a while and my vocabulary increased. Any way here’s what happened on the first wheel I got the rotor and calliper all back together and realized that the 2 holes for the retaining screws didn’t line up. I was off by 90 degrees. Which meant taking it all apart again. As it appears to me the Wheel is holding the rotor to the hub with the 5 lug nuts. So I didn’t bother with correcting it. I’ve kept the 2 screw and will replace them on the next brake job. And did the other side correct. But I just wanted to know what you think. Like I said the wheel bolts to the hub and the rotors in between. Is that sufficient once it rusts in a bit. I can’t see the rotor moving. But then why are these bolts even there. On my bmw I was told they build part of the car upside down on the assembly line and the screws hold the rotors on whilst they turn it up side right to complete the build. I wished I’d seen this video before.

Thanks a lot for this excellent video. I have a question. During new rotor and bracket installation. is there any possibility that the rotor get damaged on surface or the bracket bolt get cross threaded?

Can a regular offset wrench work. I see you used a 0 degree wrench?

How do you get that bushing to line back up with the knuckle? I started this replacement before finding your video and removed the upper control arm. Having a heck of a time getting it back in.

It is not fun. Trial and error. Don’t force it or you can break the knuckle

It was terrible the first attempt and I had a heck of a time lining it back up and damaged the control arm bushing out of frustration. Second side was a lot easier after I calmed down. In the end I wound up replacing both control arms just to get it out of the way. I removed/replaced the control arms 4 times 🙎‍♂🙎‍♂👎 during this job. When replacing I used a flathead screwdriver (pry bar was too wide) at the top edge to pry the control arm up just a smidge to get the bolt to go through. I'm a pro now 😂😂💪💪 I can change the brakes/rotor on each wheel while removing the control arm in 30 minutes tops.@@SEsGarage Thank you

I tried the offset wrench but could not get the bolt out when I used it. I tried for about an hour but the bracket was still caught on a couple threads. I had the issue on both sides. I will say that the offset wrench fit in to that tight spot perfectly. Overall I want to say thanks for the video. I wouldn't have finished this job without it. It was very hard to believe that the control arm needed to be removed for a brake job. @@SEsGarage

Yea I tried this did not work. Ran out of room. On a 2011 Sonata. So went the remove control arm route and when I got to the bottom bolt, it was only a 3/4 turn from coming out. So close. But thanks 😊

I compress the caliper with a screwdriver wedged between the old pads and old rotor, before I remove them.

I’ve never taken off the control arms to replace these brakes. Sorry you feel that way
