Bhaja Govindam also known as Moha Mudgara (The hammer that destroys delusion), is a popular devotional poem in Sanskrit composed by Sri Adi Shankaracharya.
Sung often to musical tunes, it highlights the ‘facts of living’ for all humanity - the assimilation of which leads naturally to self discovery, the essence of all Vedanta shastra
The text implores the human being to think about his/her life: ‘Why am I here? What is the point in amassing wealth and getting emotionally entangled in relationships, at the cost of mental peace? What is the Truth and purpose of my life ?
Swami Dayananda Sarasvati used to refer to this text as one of ‘conversion’- transforming an ordinary saṁsārī (one stuck in the life of becoming), into a mumukṣu (the one who desires total freedom)
Swamini Chidekarasaji unfolded selected verses of Bhaja Govindam at a recent retreat at Rishikesh, which are shared here.
