There's a story in classic Who, where the 6th Doctor is put on trial by someone called " the Valeyard", who was an evil version of the Doctor from "somewhere between his 12th and final regeneration". I can't help but wonder who the Doctor was referring to in that line. The warrior who fought in the Time War or the Valeyard, and, for the first time, I can see how that last one could come into existence.

I know Clara was never the most popular of companions, but for me, she was Capaldi's best companion and one of the best companions of Modern Who. I will admit, when she was properly introduced in 'The Bells of Saint John', she was didn't have that much of a personality, but from 'The Name of the Doctor' to 'Last Christmas' she started to slowly improve even if I had some problems (her relationship with Danny and the constant lying). However, it was this series that finally made me connect with Clara, and the close bond and devotion she shared with 12 was very heartfelt. In fact, for me, it felt reminiscent of the legendary dynamic between Tom Baker and Elizabeth Sladen. Jenna Coleman was brilliant throughout and her death in this episode was beautifully portrayed with great impact. 'Face the Raven' was a great episode, but the next one's a killer. It's one hell of a bird!

I dont know why she wasnt liked. I love Amy and Rory but If I met Amy in real life I would find her annoying. In the begining she was scared and didnt really take chances and looked for the doctor for help all the time. Towards the end she was better. Clara on the other hand was always the one to jump and go head on with the doctor. I mean she was hanging out the tardis and laughing. If that happens to Amy she would have screamed. Clara and Bill are my fav companions.

A scene that was filmed but never included in deleted scenes for some reason was, after Clara's death 12 actually picks up her body and carries her inside, resting her on a bed. That's why after her death we see 12 entering the room from another side room rather than outside, then he asks Ashildr not to wipe Rigsys memory so he can take Clara's body and tell her family about her death and give her a proper funeral, unfortunately that dialogue was cut as well. :'(

@Lukecash26 жыл бұрын
In a strange way, this episode highlighted both the best quality and the worse quality of Clara. Her big heart, selfless compassion and keen observation were on display. Also shown was her reckless adventurousness, self righteous obstinacy and overconfident cleverness. And I think that's why she's was a controversial companion, because she did have major flaws. Some of them were severe. In comparison Rose, who was RTD Mary Sue, she was hugely likable and her flaws were being naive and a romantic. Martha Jones was smart with a twinge of lovesick and Donna who was bold and clueless, but these three characters grew. Clara also followed the two other companions that made the show hugely popular. Most of these characters had a smooth storyline. Clara on the other hand didn't: She had three introductions. She had three personalities. (All played brilliantly, by Jenna) Clara first story arc was overshadowed by the path to the 50th and more about her mystery than building her character. And the solution to that mystery was either clever or contrived. However, I find that re-watching the Clara storyline within Moffat's over all Doctor story, she is actually one of the most complex characters of the run with one extensive characters growth.

There's something incredibly powerful about this episode, the idea that a companion of the doctor could die from such a simple mistake. Really poignant. There is a tendency in DW to give the companion a happy ending but I think occasionally they should do this sort of thing, remind the audience that traveling with The Doctor is a dangerous life and it can have consequences.
@georgelinford55764 жыл бұрын
'Happy endings'? There actually haven't been many happy endings in the revived era. Rose's originally ending was getting trapped in a parallel universe (even though she ended up living life with metacrisis). Martha's original ending wasn't happy, but at least it wasn't tragic. Donna got her mind wiped which in my opinion is the saddest. Amy and Rory wasn't too sad as they could still live their life together but still heartbreaking because the Doctor and their family and friends could never see them again. And Clara wasn't even too sad in the end. She's traveling the universe until time needs her to die on trap street. Bill's original ending was really tragic and as far as the Doctor knows she died as a Cyberman. So, I don't really know what you mean with happy endings. Clara actually ends up getting one of the happiest. Bill ends up getting a happy one as well I guess, and Rose 2 series after her original ending. Everyone else is sad :(
@xavierpibb74144 жыл бұрын
There weren't too many in the original era either. Susan was left behind in a Dalek-infested London. Tegan volunteered for the same fate. Adric couldn't apply the brakes. Peri, well who really knows? At least Ian and Barbara made it back. Eventually. And Jamie went all the way back.

The two saddest things about this for me... How Clara's main arc has largely been about how she has become more and more like the Doctor himself, right up to this point. But as the Doctor says, he's less breakable than she is. Her death looked like a regeneration, she was like the Doctor even in death, but she doesn't get to live on as he does. When leaving Bristol in Series 8's Flatline, the last thing the Doctor says to Rigsy is "Your last painting was so good it saved the world. I can't wait to see what you do next". The mural to Clara is the next painting of his we see.

Loved your reactions and your thoughts on our hero's misadventure in Trap Street, and particularly on Clara. The final scene's dialogue between Clara and the Doctor was heart-breakingly moving and beautifully acted by the leading pair. I do feel that Clara's character in season 9 subtly carried the trauma and damage from the loss of Danny Pink and it made sense to me that her risk-taking and thrill-seeking were signs of an instability at heart. On facing her own demise she even muses that "Maybe this is what I've wanted". However, her bravery at the end, is equally noble and tragic; an incredible performance from Jenna Coleman I also love the fact that its completely wide-open as to where the Doctor will be next ....the after-effects of all this will indeed be interesting!

You nailed Clara's character development perfectly. It really bugs me when people complain that she was never developed. I think what people meant is that they didn't like the direction she went, but it's clear they had a plan for her and executed that plan. Clara's character arc was to try to become the Doctor, and in the end, it's what did her in. It's interesting that you brought up Mummy on the Orient Express, because what Clara did in taking the Quantum Lock was almost the EXACT IDENTICAL stunt that the Doctor pulled in Mummy. putting himself in the line of fire to save everyone else and win. Only the Doctor knows the rules of each situation better than Clara. Another episode that I'm reminded of was Day of the Doctor... when Clara almost falls out of the TARDIS but is thrilled rather than scared... that was basically the opening to DotD with the Doctor. Other key frames of her arc: Being put in charge of the troops in Nightmare in Silver, choosing to enter the Doctor's timestream in Name of the Doctor even though it most likely meant sacrificing herself, being sent on her own to figure out how to "do a clever thing" to reboot Rusty's memories in Into the Dalek, taking charge against the Sherriff in Robot of Sherwood while the Doctor was too busy bickering with Robin Hood, pretending to be the Doctor in Flatline (with the Doctor coaching from inside the TARDIS), the credits gag in Death in Heaven, and her continued training under Missy as "The Magician's Apprentice" and "the Witch's Familiar"... It was a bold choice to go somewhere new with a companion's character arc, and a lot of people didn't like it. But don't say that there was no character development!

The way Clara is able to change the Doctor from boiling rage angry to calm and listening with only a few words really speaks to how well she knows him. Clara knew after she died his rage would return and that’s why she gave him the advice she did. She wasn’t worried about her life ending, she was worried about him being alone with the grief.

Curious production side note, they do not shoot the series in order. The previous episode, Sleep No More, was actually shot after this episode. So Jenna was still with them for a while after she'd shot Clara's death scene. One of those weird quirks that happens on set. As for this episode, this kickstarts what is for me one of my favorite three episode runs of the entire NuWho, second only perhaps to series four's Silence in the Library, Forest of the Dead, and Midnight. It has its detractors, and I know I'm in the minority, but I absolutely love where the rest of the series goes. It's completely character-based storytelling, and I love it.

It's not the first time, but she is human and miscalculated this time. I loved Clara, not as much as the ponds, but my favorite next to them. The next episode is probably Peter's best. No spoilers.

One of the most powerful death scenes in Doctor Who. Because, while there have been a lot of tragic departures, when Clara dies, it hurts. It's not off-camera, it's not stoic, it's not a gentle slipping into the night - she dies, and it hurts, and she screams. It's brutal.

Your analyses are always so thoughtful and articulate. I appreciate you taking the time to really sit with it and mull it over. Clara is personally my favorite companion and I feel you did right by her character even if we didn’t agree on every bullet point. Enjoy the next two episodes. They’re gonna be a whopper.

Ann Zheng Jess said it a few weeks ago. Clara's demise has been signposted all through the series but of course noted that Clara couldn't just stop it would have to be something dramatic for her to. Couldn't help but smile after she said that..

As much as "Face the Raven" is a terribly sad episode, and as a result not an episode I seek out unless I'm doing a full series rewatch, it is absolutely brilliant. Watching Sesska's reaction, I actually noticed another neat little detail I hadn't picked up on before - Clara takes the Chronolock from Rigsy to ensure he can go home to his daughter, and the Doctor willingly walks into the trap with the TARDIS key to reunite Anah and Anahson - it's another neat little parallel showing how alike Clara and the Doctor are.

Clara and the Doctor are a modern version of Patroclus and Achilles from "The Illiad", in the sense that both Clara and Patroclus reach a point where they know their respective leaders so well, they feel they can practically become them. In fact, each of them wields some representation of the hero: Patroclus taking Achilles armor to battle, and Clara taking up the Doctor's sonic screwdriver. Unfortunately since neither truly is the ultimate hero, they cannot maintain that level of performance, and eventually stumble and perish.

Listen, without giving any spoilers, I want you to know, that of the four reactors I follow, three of them have lost footage to the next episode. It's cursed. It's the best episode of the lot, and it keeps vanishing into the black hole of wherever files go. Please take precautions when filming your reaction to episode eleven.
