Fun fact: after this movie was released, Queen Latifah put a no death clause in her future movie contracts because she understood how traumatic it was for her to act it out and how the audience received it. It was too heavy for her to deal with so if her character does have to die, it can’t be on camera and it can’t be gory.

I feel like removing the racial aspect to the cop's arc oversimplifies his character. I think HE thought he was just 'all about his job' but letting one of them go for sympathy literally doesn't make sense for his character. He was faced with his unconscious bias by seeing how the local cops just immediately unload on every black perp no questions. He didn't try to bring perps back alive until after killing the boy. He makes that one change, and it showed him how the cop bias is actually racial bias. He let stoney go because the weight of all that bloodshed left him guilty. He feels responsible for turning her life upside down and leading her down this desperation path into crime.
@cinemeleon2808Ай бұрын
Yes, yes and yes!
@seedking40Ай бұрын
Letting Stoney go is within his character. He's a detective that is suppose to investigate criminals. Stevie was not only innocent of the robbery but he also was squeaky clean even after losing both of his parents. The money is insured and Stoney has already lost everything. He owed Stoney because of what he did to her brother. He basically delivered street restitution to Stoney. He also realized he played a critical role in Frankie becoming a bank robber because she was the brains. She could have blew him away since she knew it was over for her but with nothing to lose she still spared him. Why not show Stoney the same grace??
@danerook26 күн бұрын
It isn't racial bias
@jaydarussell290118 күн бұрын
It was obviously racially biased. That's how the show started off in the first place. The bank got rubbed by black men, and a black woman who so happens to come from the same hood got the heat, even tho there were other bank teller there who could have pushed the silent alarm when they saw men with guns😒. Franky, A.K.A Vivica A. Fox, was the only one to get fired and her boss literally told her, he was uncomfortable with her "being friends" with one of the perps 🙄, it started out racially biased. That's what kept the detective thinking franky was involved in the robbery even when she wasn't.
@CloroxBleach-lm2gmКүн бұрын
@@danerook the whole movie is an exaggeration of how racism pushes ppl to go to extremes. TT white boss having no sympathy for her having a kid and docking her pay. Social services taking her child. Frankie being fired from her job of 2 years. Stony brother being falsely identified and then him being shot grabbing a bottle(something that still happens today) The boss running off w the money. All of that pushed them to a life of crime. It’s an allegory for real black ppl around those surroundings. A lot of us feel like we can’t catch a break and turn to crime for material satisfaction and to relieve the stress of struggle.

Also, Jaby just gets it, with the scene where Cleo tells Stoney and Frankie to get out of the car in the tunnel. That moment when Stoney goes to embrace Cleo after she tells them she'll catch up with them later and they both tear up, was like a gut punch to me because they both knew, in that instant, the chance of that happening wasn't at all likely. The same for the hug Stoney and Frankie shared right before the split at the gate. The same as the kiss Stoney placed on TeTe before leaving her body in the car. The way this story built their connections and sisterhood, made every moment that much more palpable. Their excitements, hopefulness, heightened fears, disappointments, sorrows, regrets...etc. I saw this movies countless times, starting when I was a teen in the 90s. It took me seeing it as a woman in my mid 30s who has experienced enough of these character's emotions and now hold a deeper understanding of sisterhoods. The emotions were so high and the stakes even higher. At some point, they just decide to fully commit after going from one level to the next of "well there's no turning back from this, now that we've done that, so we might as well keep on going" all the way to the moment they're busting down the freeway with cops tailing and helicopters looming, wanted for robbery and murder. The guts, the heart, the intensity, the commitment. In those moments I was with them...and for other brief moments, in my mind, I WAS them. I was fully SWEPT, emotionally spent and, dammit, crying right along with Stoney in that damn hotel room feeling like, I too, had just lost my sisters. And a movie that does THAT?? Whew!

Jaby, cops going in with guns a blazing while innocent bystanders are around is a real reality. Here in NYC, a man hopped the train withouth paying his fare and he was allegedly armed with a knife. The man was followed into the train car, police opened fire and two innocent bystanders were shot.

This movie is a prime example as to why we in the Black community are mad that our works are not acknowledged. This movie is nothing shy of oscar-worthy, with oscar-worthy performances. And do you think it got one nomination, let alone any wins? Exactly.

“It’s a wonder they didn’t get a sequel” 😂😩 Set It Off Again has been a funny internet rumor for years but I remember sneaking to watch this for the first time (as a kid) because my mom’s best friend would say I looked like a “little Jada Pinkett” and I felt insulted because I’m a kid and don’t know who that is. My older cousin lifted the key to the cabinet (where anything rated R was) so she could show me the movie and I’d stop being offended, it worked 90s Jada was chef’s kiss 🤌🏽✨

She is currently married to her wife, and they have a child together . This movie has some of thw msot fanous black woman in Hollywood. I agree, it is. It's still a great show IMHO, definitely a 90s classic, I remember the line-up like it was yesterday.
