This is a set play to run against a 1-2-2 or 3-2 zone defense. If you have two players who understand how to run a two person game and can skillfully execute a pick and roll, pick and pop, hand off, and slip screens, then this play is great to run! The best measure of whether your players can and should execute this play is if they can make good reads on the defense at game speed. That's usually a skill developed over time and not as easy for younger players.
Typically, when playing against a team running a zone defense, I like to employ an offensive strategy like Overload or the Triangle. These continuous offensive plays allows for various looks at scoring opportunities based on what the defense is allowing.
With this set play, we are intentionally trying to break down certain vulnerable areas and tendencies in the 1-2-2 or 3-2 zone defense and force the defense to have to communicate; usually something most teams aren't great at doing.
I hope you enjoyed this video and try it out with your team. Please subscribe to my channel and leave me a comment or question below.
If you have recorded video of your team executing this play or any of the plays you've learned from my channel and would like for me to do a KZbin video review of your team executing the play, please email me at

Blessings to you!

Alex, it has to be a quick ball reversal, with the 5 inching up as the pass is on its way to the top of the key. The 5 cannot wait until the ball is to the top to move. If you do this quickly you will catch the D out of position long enough to create the matchups that are being illustrated.

that totally depends on how the coverage is coming along. this is straight out of tex winthers playbook, or triangle offense. If the top defender isnt trying to deny the pass back to the top, then the big guy will wait with his highpost flash, till the ball is caught out top. in bball, the less parts that are moving at the same time, the easier it is to read. i was at a clinic with ettore messina some years back, SAS spurs ast back then, and he said it like this: you want either ball to come to post or post to come to ball. you dont bring a player and the ball at the same time. you can agree or disagree, any principle will have it´s counters. but you cant say that the big has to move early every time - that just allows the d to cheat

What would be the adjustment if the 4x went to guard the PG1 in the corner? This seems great of the defense plays the zone this way, but I am used to the 4x going to the corner and the 3 defenders at the top staying there up top.

2:26 Would've been a great play if the 3 defenders you had shift on that one side of the court actually didn't move or stayed there when you rotated the ball back up top...lol

I would either match up or go with a 1-2-2 / 3-2 zone defense. I hope that helps.
