Interesting fact (not sure if it was talked about during this interview) is the way that the battle was written in the end was all Em’s idea because he originally had no reason to hate Anthony and vice versa cause they were actually friends. So Em asked him if he could Google some true stuff about him and freestyle about that to kinda bring something personal to the battle since personally he had no reason to really hate him. Remember they tend to shoot movies like this out of order for a number of reasons so the rap battles were shot first and then they shot all the other stuff. So filming wise none of the stuff we saw throughout the movie happened yet. Anyway he did so part of the battle when he says, “he has two good parents and went to nice school and what not is all real about Mackie but they turned it to about Papa doc aside from the Clarence part of course lol. Anyway Anthony was like damn he going have me look like a fool so be tried desperately to tweak it a little. I mean the fact Em brought real life stuff in had him (movie or not) wanting to defend hisself lol. Em still wins in the end of course but he wanted to be able to say something and not look stupid. In the long run it worked better in my eyes rather than say a tie and they have a battle to break the tie (Anthony’s idea lol) cause it plays on what happened in the beginning when Em froze up. He redeemed hisself completely by making the top guy freeze up. Anyway my original point is I honestly think Mackie has been waiting on this moment to show he can freestyle and they didn’t write the script the way they did because he couldn’t spit off the top of his dome but it was simply by design and a director’s choice.
