Anyways, I really appreciate the work that goes into these videos; from the green screen effects to the photoshop to all the handouts and 'cut scenes' these are some of the most fun videos to watch. Getting players to run is perhaps the hardest thing a GM can do, because through either video games or less narratively set up campaigns, the average player is conditioned to believe that any threat placed before them is meant to be surmountable, either by direct confrontation or subverted through some kind of puzzle. Being presented a threat that overpowers them then leads to a kneejerk reaction of "this is an unfair fight" when it's not actually supposed to be a fight in the first place. Players also don't like to run because they like feeling powerful and being heroes, and fleeing, while it can be tactical and pragmatic, doesn't usually feel heroic or badass. Then there's the issue of "railroading" that you mentioned, in that presenting a scenario that can only really be resolved by running usually means every other means of dealing with the situation is off the table by necessity. Honestly, "How to get characters to want to run" feels like it could be a game tips video all on its own. Also, love how when given the option of any expensive gift they wanted, they chose more personal items related to their characters rather than a game optimized item.
@dirus31425 ай бұрын
exactly. While all of this does apply to gamers 30+ years ago, I think running was more of an option back then. "Kids today" notions aside, I've observed the gamer culture change were moments that show the players they are not the big swinging dicks of the world are seen as unfair, and DM fiat, at best.

@@skyblazeeterno to be fair its hard to kill or really fight stuff in COC. unless I'm misremembering editions or something in general your normally more just trying to survive and escape with the exception of twin headed serpent, but to be fair when you have a demo man who's a little over zealous with his tools, or some heavy firepower vehicles like angels of iron, generally the priority is more run and escape. or cut off the other worldly thing or seal them in something. even then its almost always a case of "unless we have things stacked in our favor we should run that thing will kill us on a level playing field and we can't hold it off for long"

The thicker pages are due to the paper shortage a couple of years ago. A few game companies, even after the paper shortage was over, have apparently stuck with the heavier paper weight. I suggest that an encounter to replace quicksand or mud, while traveling in a hover vehicle, is low-hanging vines which slows progress since the players will need to cut a way through or find another way around.

"Why don't you come over to my house tonight, we can all have dinner together?" she replies. "By the way," the father says, "have you told him about your heart condition?" "No!" she snaps, "and you'd better not say anything about it to him, either! I'm almost 40 years old, now, it's not like men who want to marry me are crawling out of the woodwork these days!" "Criminy! Don't bite my head off," says Pops, "Okay, okay, I'll keep stumm!" and the two of them arrange what time he should show up for dinner. All during dinner, though, the father's conscience bothers him. He doesn't want this nice fellow, the fiance to get into a situation he doesn't understand. That wouldn't be right. So, after dinner is over and they've taken coffees into the living room and the daughter goes into the kitchen to get some pie out of the fridge, the father turns to the fiance. "I want you to know something," he says, quickly and quietly. "My daughter has acute angina." The fiance looks blank for a second, then smiles suddenly. "I sure am glad to hear you say that!" he says, "'cause she sure ain't got much for tits!"

great video nd glad to see this come out great work and looking forward for more some ideas to help convey that maybe the players should run is maybe the lodge has some short range radio scanners and decrypters so what could happen is hearing the computer make some automated message like "encrypted signal detected decoding" the marines blare over the unencoded coms channel to surrender the computer decodes the secure line and the marines are having a bit of a back and fourth ether relaying positions and orders "if the captain says they are guilty they are guilty don't ask questions above your paygrade" or maybe one of them is kind of lampshading the overkill nature of the 6 of them but it gives one of the others the option to kinda state they have more backup so beating the 6 isn't a win condition its just delaying the rest of however many are on the main ship that could drop in, for example "do we really need 6 guys for this, I mean I know we got plenty of men on the ship but really all of us?" it also temps me to add a line like something out of the all guardsmen party good soldiers bad educators when the recruits accidently signaled over all channels for what amounted to maybe 3 sickly hobos with knives and they called in a whole army to deal with it by accident over the all bands emergency frequency. "what's wrong? you want me to call in the other 50 men not counting the ship security and captains honor guard because you don't feel safe enough with just us 6? suck it up Johnson we got the best gear and weapons in the business and they have what? maybe some flak armor and an axe?" honestly having one of them start to panic and try to radio in backup only for one of them to offhand mention "and this is why we had to disable your sos radio one things go wrong and you try and call in the over several teams for backup" would be another way to signal that they (the marines) have alot of backup so they (the players) need to run also as far as the sandblaster vs heavy armored marine. thing I think having what I assume would be a wall of sand hit you all at once or as a focused blast, I mean even if your heavy armored I would imagine getting just sluged with a heavybag full of sand is gonna knock you down or back, unless your in magboots on metal with servo assed power armor to fight the raw force pushing you back, ether that or just knocking you over. plus a sandcaster is meant for giant space battles against people that's gonna be a shotgun barrel the size of a truck with around the same volume of sand being fired, that's got to be enough to ether knock you down or force you against a wall or loosely bury you enough its gonna take a round or 3 to get loose. and in a humid jungle, now I'm just imagining that first few seconds of sand being cast was all clumpy and dense from what was left in the barrel just being in the humid air for who knows how long.

Particularly looking forward to you suggestion about a something important mentioned in chapter 5 but didn't show up in chapter 7 like we were told.

I'm 90% sure I know which item you mean. Involving the Star Hunter? (Spoilers below) So I'm doing this part next session, I hope. Basically it's Caol. The Travellers have 2 ways off planet. One is the long-distance haul to the rocket in the adventure. The second is Caol will tell them a long-distance haul to a teleporter gate that leads back to the first world with the starport. There they'll need to get to the ship and Seven's forces are tearing the place apart. The Hunter Vargr will also be trying to get into the ship to escape, so it'll be a fight. I'll go over it better when I do the vid, but that's the short of it.

Amazed that this Aventure has nothibg to do with the original. So far I do not see it as better or worse just very different. GREAT CONTENT as always Seth! Oink! = @ )

Yeah, it's definitely more of a reimagining. The overlap is mostly around Ch4-6, but there a few little thing. For example, in the original Adventure 12, the guy who originally found the Ancients statue at the gas giant, later died, and his inheritor hires the Travellers, was named Vlen Backett.

@@SSkorkowsky I don't remember that. I'll have to break out the old CT adventure and have a look. It is nor that I don't trust you. Far from it. It just gives me a reason to dive into my old CT box again! I know what I'm doing this weekend. Do you go to cons? Although I have been gaming for 35+ years (Off and on mind you, life has a way of getting in the way!), I have never been to a con. If I went to a con it would be cool to be at one where you are. Which cons would you recommend? I've always avoided them.

This year I'm going GenCon next week, then GameHole Con in October. Also finalizing stuff to go to KamCon in BC this October, so that one is 99% likely.

You coming out with this makes me want to play some Traveller again. But the problem is we already have a game running, my choice days in the friend group are running Call of Kidthlhu (with my own twist and world), and the next choice days of mine and a friend are trying some Cyberpunk Red. There's only one solution to this problem! I must start working on the old idea for running an MMO Death Game like Sword Art Online! A company has made 3 successful games, each one allowing me to use multiple systems: a pulpy game involving combating otherworldly creatures (Call of Cthulhu), a Dark Fantasy World (D&D), and a space sim (Traveller). The players can jump around trying to solve the greater mystery with Cyberpunk Red acting as a real world system for anything out in the world out of game! So many game systems to play, so little time!

Psionic Kaiju Trees. Also super-giant crabs
@DarkVeghetta5 ай бұрын
@@SSkorkowsky As opposed to standard-giant crabs? :P Also, those trees sound more and more like Hist trees, but presumably ambulatory. This never occurred to me before, but I think kaijus require at least some mobility, otherwise this would only be a huge, if psionic, tree.

@@SSkorkowsky Ofc they do. As one does if one happens to be a giant kaiju tree. 🌲 Also, as someone who's watched over 90% of your on-channel videos over several years now - thank you for all the content, laughs, memories, and gaming wisdom, Seth. All the best from Transylvania! 🧛♂

I hate they don't put the handouts in the book. Chaosium has started doing that and it seems really cheap to me. They explain that would add dozens of pages to the product. Then add them! I want a full book and don't want to have to download things like this. There. Rant over. Wouldn't the radiation on Allele destroy the bugs implanted in the vargr? What happened to Beck's Halo? Did they leave it behind? Great review and story as always.
@SSkorkowsky5 ай бұрын
100%. I love downloadable bonus stuff or printable handouts, or even downloadable prettier handouts, but the book should be self-contained. The Handout Pack, once you remove the cover, is just 5 pages. I can't imagine it would have made a significant difference in printing cost. The bug might glitch while on Alell, but wouldn't be destroyed. One they leave the system it'll work like normal. The Halo got seized by the Imperium. Where it's being kept and how they can get it back... we'll just have to wait until my players get to that chapter. They're almost there.

I always enjoyed Traveller, since the 90s. I live in South Carolina now and have scoured the net for groups. Anyone able to help find such a group?

Uncle Wlen was quite the scoundrel, wasn’t he?
@Scanner96315 ай бұрын
Was? With 1000 years of keeping alive in really deadly situations are you sure it was him and not a clone? He might still show up and want his ship back. 😇
