If you want something similar but lighter on rules and theme, I'd suggest checking out 'Monster Of The Week'. It's based on the same core PbtA system, but less dark and gruesome and has a modern monster hunting theme.

The core book is way over the top, the actual modules don't go nearly as far. The core book is like "RAPE EM! RAPE EM EVERY SESSION!" but the modules are like "wouldn't it be fucked up if you killed a guy with a rock?"

So, in the Seth Skorkowsky multiverse, there are dozens of characters named Jack who are all trying to survive the worst that universe can throw at them. One of these days they are going to figure out a way to pass between the universes, gang up, and come after Seth for putting them through all this.

Hi Seth. Thank you so much for this. The core book landed in my apartment 2 days ago and I showed it to my girl. She said "Hmm, looks a bit scary. We'll see." And then we watched your video together. After, she looked me in the eyes and said "Ok, we're doing this". I agree wholeheartedly about the questions when making the characters. A friend of mine uses this in other rpgs as well, and even the dark secrets and it is really appreciated. Lastly, if you ever happen to come to Sweden, me and my girl would be very happy to show you around. Thank you! From Alicia and Leela.

I love these in depth videos on game systems. Especially the step by step of character creation. I'm the one who usually has to try and learn a new system and then teach others if I want to play it, and that can be very difficult. It's so great having such a well thought out and very clear video like this to learn from. While Kult isn't really my style of game, the previous Traveler series was excellent and I really hope to see more of these down the road. Maybe more generic systems like GURPS or Savage Worlds.

I can really see starting PCs as Sleepers being a great way to introduce new players to the system and the setting. The players find out what's up at the same time their characters do. Once players are familiar with the setting though, you're right, probably best to just start them as Aware. Most of the emotional impact of the journey from sleep to waking is going to be gone. Surprises and revelations are the kind of thing I prefer to be genuine. And _of course_ a new character joining the campaign should be of an equal "level" as the other PCs.

Well, I'm not sure Kult is for me (I don't think I'd want to do a random pick up group for this, and my normal group is definitely not mature enough nor interested in going there), and above all, I really don't like the powered by the apocalypse system (I really don't like the 'partial success/success at a cost' in the middle; though I love degrees of success systems). But then I said the very similar things about Call of Cthulhu, and your videos have converted me, so you never know. All I know is more of Seth's videos is a good thing. I just love listening to them, regardless of topic.

As a GM, making characters definitely helps me understand the system. For players though, I suggest GMs make a few test characters for them to try out, 2 or 3 per player so you have plenty to go around. Then run one or two adventure modules such as Call of Cthulhu 's "Paper Chase" or Traveller's "Death Station" to see if your players like the feel of the game overall. If they take to a system, then everyone can make characters!

Seth, I would absolutely love a demonstration of different methods of group character creation. Over the years I've been part of multiple aborted campaigns in which everyone created characters and then realized that they had no common goal or reason to associate, much less work together. One notable example was Unknown Armies 2e, where we realized after the fact that the corebook was recommending joint character creation without requiring it or directly referencing those sections in the char gen material.

Always happy to see the return of Jack! Honestly I agree wholeheartedly on the how effective the character interview portion of creation is! Me and my players sorta got hooked on character questionnaires after playing dread and have sort of been applying that to other games. But I think that doing them sort of interview style with the party allows for some good ideas to come from both the spontaneity and the collaborative aspect! Plus there's something about getting to do this out loud and with a group and sort of play your character as you respond to the questions, because then you also get how they feel about these responses too. Great vid as always!

Hello Seth, Lime, and Today I'm going to be continuing the Tale of my Campaign 'The Incomplete Constellation'. Part 5: The Club of Shattering (Part 1) Let's start off with a recap. The players: 'Bill', ' Kathrine', 'Chief Jeef' and 'Jemma'. Their Characters: Ayingleheim the Goliath Barbarian, Amayali the Dragonblood Elf Monk, Valociel the Aasimar Paladin, and Ilieptra the Tiefling sorcerer. The DM: Me. The Player Characters are all the spawn of Deities, and are looking to become great heroes, to take the Incomplete Constellation in order to ascend to true godhood. They've formed an alliance to do so, intending to Share the Incomplete Constellation and ascend together. Last time: Along with their demigod ally Nehkalion, and their army of the scorpion people, they laid waste to the Bergine capital of Celeboir, and seized the Tempest Circlet. This time: Ayingleheim was still sat on their throne in their ruined keep, inviting the empire's fleet to attack, to retake Celeboir, but most of their armies didn't want to attack their literal God Of War. And since Amayali was wearing the Tempest Circlet, the only Bergine winners were the ones that didn't try to fight. The fleet was swallowed up by the sea and destroyed. Then the Godsquad headed on into Avernus, seeking the next piece of the Staff, which was the Club of Dimensional Shattering, which was in The tentacles of Demogorgon. Now, nobody thought fighting Demogorgon for it straight up was a good idea, but Nehkalion knew of a way to take him out. He knew about a magical metal called 'Paragonium' that existed right on the fringe of the Abyss crossing from the Hells. It could only be shaped by A Devil Lord's fire, but can only be worn by a being of Good, No Devil Lord can ever be Good, and no Devil Lord would ever forge Paragonium for a Good being. Resolving this catch-22 would be worth it though, Paragonium is entirely impervious to Chaotic entities, like, for example; Demons. So if Someone were wearing Paragonium armour they could Kill Demogorgon without Demogorgon being able to do anything. Permanently if they did it in the Abyss. Valociel presented an Answer to that Catch-22. His Mother, Zariel, is a Devil Lord. She wants the Demons of The abyss destroyed more than anything; and is again, his Mother. And Valociel's alignment? Good. So he was perfect to receive the Armour, and getting the Paragonium wasn't the hard part, thanks to Swiftriver for the Demons & the fact that The devils all obeyed Valociel and called him 'General'. They weren't really in any fatal danger even when the fights got rough they had things under control. (Still took most of a session, because even in hell, players find ways to draw things out.) No, it was finding Zariel that was a tough quest. They must've trekked across half the plane, but eventually with the lump of raw Paragonium in hand, they found Her. Of course this lead to a bit of an awkward scene in which Valociel had to explain what he was doing and why he'd teamed up with so many other random Demigods, getting Basically the Fallen Angel version of the 'I don't want you hanging around with them' speech, even had a 'I knew a Kid who' segment, about trusting Gods of Death, Which didn't end how you think, "Calloway" (who trusted a Death God) wound up in a dead-end office job on Mechanus. After suffering a level of embarrassment that even an Immortal would struggle to take, Valociel was able to convince her to make the Paragonium Armour, so that he could Kill Demogorgon. He left out why he was doing it, but Zariel didn't care, the thought of *Her Son* slaying Demogorgon and ridding the multiverse of him permanently had her completely over the moon. So now Valociel had the Armour, no demon could harm him, now all the squad needed to do was get Him to Demogorgon... Easier said than done, I know. The first step to reaching Demogorgon was finding Demogorgon, but this comment is so big it's causing lag already so that'll be for next time. Until then Seth, You have a great day. ???: You know, We really dodged a bullet there. How so? ???: Zariel hates ALL Abyss dwellers, So if she knew who Amayali really was, she probably would've killed her. Huh. You're right, Disembodied second narrator who imitates the Style of Jack the NPC. ???: It's Zack the NCP. It stands for 'Non Commenter Persona.', Cause I'm not You. Cool.

Interesting. Without knowing the rules, just the character sheet and creation process lend themselves to a rules-lite, narrative-focused system. Nothing wrong with that at all. Kult does fall prey to one of my bugaboos, though, and that's the "Magazine of Infinite Disadvantages" rule. The idea that a Disadvantage must be replaced. Game characters, like their fictional counterparts, evolve. Sometimes, that evolution takes the form of ridding themselves of the demons that once held them back. I guess what I am saying is that I like your take on letting the needs of the story dictate any Disadvantages. It will be interesting to see this series through. I am fascinated by where a long-term Kult campaign ends up.

As someone who's entire life is dedicated to learning and teaching real occultism, I can agree that skepticism gets very old very fast. I'm seriously about to just start overdosing my students with hallucinogens until someone has a break through or goes insane, because all this same is getting to me. The world is literally collapsing right now, yet where is the chaos?

I love these series where Seth explains the components of a game system over multiple videos. I'm not sure if my group would ever play Kult since some of them have no further desire to ever play Call of Cthulhu, so I suspect the whole Gnostic Demi-Urge angle would not go over well. But I can always dream... With that said, at ca. 15:15, the definition of Level 0 Relation Strength treats friends, co-workers and acquaintances as functionally the same. Level 1 includes close friends, among others. I grew up in the US, but later studied in Germany a few times. In Germany, "friend" would replace "close friend" because in German, that is what the word means (or did, when I was much younger). It could also mean a boyfriend or girlfriend in the romantic sense. Maybe English does it better, now that I think about it. This isn't a critique, it is just an observation. Initially I thought that maybe this system needs four levels for Relation Strength, but then that probably just screws up something else...

You could always steal the game system and transplant it into a new setting and remove the things in it your players don't like. Maybe even use the cult angle for a group of baddies so it's more in the background, maybe there is another world but it's more like another planet or even a new continent if you set your adventure during some kind of age of discovery. Wait this is starting to sound like Warcraft...

Damn it would be nice to have played something like this at some point with an old group of friends. Even just character creation doesn't seem like a chore here and more like an important part of playing the game itself, how cool. I say would have been nice because there was always that friend with the rules for thee but not for me when it came to boundaries and barriers. They could be very abrupt with stuff. Seems like being able to take a punch turned them into someone who didn't have to bother with considering other people because we were always reminded- he could take a punch. As it that mattered among friends, which I suppose it did, to him. Anyway D&D imploded that group many years ago now even though I occasionally wonder what happened to everybody so I guess it's what's at the heart of Kult which is important, communication and some people lost in their own little worlds of personal ego and interpersonal understanding just shouldn't play roleplay games full stop, especially when their tolerance is set to whatever they choose it to be for any given situation. Seeing that relations chart really made me say "huh" and think about the whole thing. It really brings back the memories. Doomed ones but hey I didn't know better and there wasn't really anything I could have done when people choose to make someone invisible and people don't like ghosts hanging around, so they lash out a bit, do a bit of ghostbusting. There's so much depth in the Kult system, even with one character example. Nice to have these videos exploring what's going on in a way that can be enjoyed second hand without feeling as if someone like me is missing out. A lot of content creators don't realise this but when they talk about their games and how to play them there's a "you needed to be there/need to be here" vibe to their scenarios I've yet to see from this channel, even in the skits showing what happened before. The only time it showed up was when it made sense, in the Jeff video because that was the whole point.

As a GM I prefer players starting as Sleepers. For me the appeal of horror, especially in KULT, is normal people colliding with the unfathomable truth and horror of the world around them. That's the stories I like to tell.

13:49 Odd that Netzach is the Violent one. Though it might be about how Netzach represents Victory, or the ability to overcome one's hardships. And in this world, violence is the best way to achieve victory.
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky Жыл бұрын
Netzach, within the Kult RPG, is violent. His titles are The Victor, The Endurer, The Eternal, and The Conqueror. Opening paragraph of his description is: "The burning desire for conquest and victory is the essence of Netzach’s being. He was previously a general under the Demiurge, but now strives to replace his old master by increasing his own influence over the military, private armies, mercenaries, guerrilla warriors, and state-sponsored terrorists. He drives the majestic machinery of war and his servants are commanders, soldiers, lobbyists, and politicians. These minions set political agendas, such as crushing terrorism, occupying nations rich with oil, reconquering the Holy Land, and creating a new caliphate. Once the Archon’s vision and goals are accepted by the public, troops are sent into the meat grinders of war."

I have to see how the other game systems work later, but given Kult's overwhelming focus on interaction I'm extremely surprised there are only three levels of relations. It seems to me there is a lot of distance between the guy at the next register at work and a guru, personal mentor or close parent. It seems very underdone. Given the strong focus on sex and notes of body horror, but very light relation system, Kult is starting to feel somewhat shallow. It's not that I don't think it can be run well or be a deep experience, but it seems the system and its intended use are at odds. I will just have to wait and see!

Incidentally I've been listening to the audio Book of your Novel Ashes of Onyx (which I'm very much enjoying) and I couldn't help wondering if your finding there is a bit of overlap in the process of creating a memorable character for one of your novels and creating NPC's or PC's in one of your RPG's?
@SSkorkowsky
@SSkorkowsky Жыл бұрын
Quite a lot. Most comparisons of writing a book to writing a game are terribly wrong, but one area that does have a lot of overlap is characters. With a story, PCs are the ones who we get to see through their Point-of-View (in Ashes of Onyx, that's Kate). NPCs are the characters we never get inside their head and our only impressions of them are filtered through the main character's perspective (everyone else in Ashes of Onyx). Some aspects are planned while others are organic and just sort of happen. For example, in Chapter 1 I decided to have Kate's ringtone be Bad Reputation by Joan Jett. A small detail. The result became 3 chapters named after Joan Jett songs. Glad to hear you're enjoying it.
