Thanks for the layout and suggestions, Seth. I ran this (on a boat) in the weekend, my first time being a Keeper for Pulp - and indeed my first time physically Keeping with my friends in the same room. Your suggestions were very helpful. I was quick to underline that this was pretty linear and would involve combat - so characters should be appropriately skilled and motivated (this was a one-off for us). The thing I am learning to love about Pulp Cthulhu is how much it encourages the players to actively play a role in upping the action and danger (usually through pushed rolls). For me, the harbour section, with dynamite, crazy cultists, boats blowing up, and the time pressure, was probably the highlight - pure Pulp Cthulhu in one scene (minus a mind-jarring monster). Add into that the failed pushed rolls (to drive a Truck up a jetty on two wheels) and a fumbled Throw roll (by the cultists hurling dynamite, fortunately) and it was a classic comedy-adventure scene.

@SSkorkowsky7 жыл бұрын
I'm convinced that Chaosium made Pulp Cthulhu just for me. We still play regular CoC scenarios with it (with tons of investigation and normal CoCo stuff) but then it adds the part where the heroes have the ability to kick a little ass from time to time. We all played D&D and Cyberpunk for too many years not to need the occasional hack and slash adventure just to keep the taste in our mouths.
@thegameoverclub7 жыл бұрын
Great point Seth, Nothing wrong with a little bit of ass kicking for the player investigators from time to time.

We had a lot of fun with it. But it is VERY linear and VERY combat-focused. Pretty different than the standard Call of Cthulhu adventure.

Heh. Rewatching this video again. My ordered Pulp Cthulhu book came in today. And on your review of the book, you weren't kidding about it being a bit of a different beast than the base game, thanks to those archetypes the the whole Keeper-allowed psychic powers... and weird science. I'm wondering if you've successfully run the other scenarios in the book. Admittedly, avoiding spoilers, Chapter 12's adventure grabbed my attention in particular, though I admit I could easily see why both it and 10 may not hold interest to some.

I haven't run any of the others in the main book yet. No real reason why not outside of they just didn't fit as smoothly into our campaign

I used the boat chase as 3 cultist and the priest was heading towards Wisteria Island from the horizon. The Heroes did enough damage where the robes of the priest and got tattered up revealing the scales and gills. (The PCs only fought humans by this point) so it provided a great moment that something was not as it seems. Later they blasted a cap in his ass and saved the sacrifices. Good game man, good game...

Just ran this scenario. Was an emergency one shot because a player couldn’t make it. Not my cup of tea, even one of my Players who is a known murder hobo was fatigued by the action. As a GM I found introducing Hector clunky and was genuinely relieved when he died. I’ve now learned that when running pulp I’ll be having a much lower pulp O’meter.

Newish keeper here: what minatures do you use for your combat scenes?
@SSkorkowsky2 жыл бұрын
Depends on the combat. For ones like this, where I have an army of cultists, I bust out my box of Cthulhu Wars, which has 24 cultists (6 Blue, Red, Yellow, and Green). The colors might also help me track what type, like "Blue ones have knives. Red ones have clubs". Otherwise I have a pretty big collection of CoC minis compiled from a lot of different companies over several years (RAFM, Grenadier, Reaper, Pulp Miniatures, etc.).
