I've been through all this... I am from Gujarat and we have so called Gotra system too. We also ran away from home and got marry, my parents didn't accepted my marriage for 19 years. I was humiliated so many way by so many people. My whole family cut me off for 19 years, my children never met my family. I am not in India any more. I still remember that time, I am glad I am not there any more, it was a huge incident in my town.
