_Daredevil_ is already an incredible piece of music by itself, but even more so when you consider the circumstances of its creation. The game was already complete when it was done, and _Daredevil_ was the very last song composed and submitted after the deadline. The mission story and radio chatter was reworked just so this song would fit exactly right. Really, it can be summed up in this exchange over the phone between Kazutoki Kono, the game’s producer, and Keiki Kobayashi, the composer, not long before release. “I want one music track, and it has to be a really great one. I want you to compose it now.” “I understand.”
@RaveSault

Don't forget they had to go back and redo "Daredevil" again because after listening it together with Kono, Kobayashi felt it needed more impact. And again, this was *near* the release date.

@@RaveSault Add onto that, all the work on daredevil was done in 4 days. 4 days, rushed after deadline to make it into the gold master, audio tweaked at the last minute after days of work, and it's likely one of the best tracks Kobayashi has written.

The fact that Daredevil uses both human instruments (plus vocals) and electronic is also a smart move, if not probably intentional. It was played at the very pivotal moment where you decide the fate of humanity in a battle between humans and machines. You'd notice that gradually as the music progresses, human instrumental slowly began to triumph over the electronic base. I'm amazed at how you came to feel that a 'T-1000 is coming for you' at the beginning, because if only you knew the plot of Ace Combat 7. A proof of how music indeed can play a role in storytelling.

Ace Combat series is famous for its twisted story and on point soundtrack. Surprisingly enough, Project Wingman, a crowdfunded spiritual successor to the AC series made by handful of fans, managed to nail the formula perfectly and stands up to its source of inspiration in every way, being embraced by AC fans as equal. So, since then when AC soundrack is discussed, PW always follows.

Hilarious of you to assume that PW comes even close to the greatness of AC. Its story was so forgettable other than Crimson 1 being a complete and utter waste of space.
@evilbabai7083
@evilbabai7083 2 жыл бұрын
@@lelouchvibritannia4028 Okay, let's be honest, AC are not the perfect games by any means, especially in terms of story - despite the interesting setting and engaging global plot, the writing and narrative are utter trash, full of inconsistencies and worst anime cliches. Almost every game shares the same structure, has a mute rookie pilot growing into the legend, has its own "slogan", which is shamelessly pushed into your ears over and over, has the pretentious philosophy which in the end comes down to some basic naive message like "war is bad". Most characters are shallow and generic, staying in memory just because how unbelievably dumb they are (hello, Nagase). I love AC, but I have to make an effort to overcome the cringe every time I watch the cutscenes and listen to the radio chatter, because real people don't talk like that and don't act this way (and I bet even Japanese). It works as a game only because of the solid overall style of each installment, decent world building, great gameplay loop and on point soundtrack. And PW did basically the same, as far as meager budget and a miniscule production team allowed (one developer, one screenwriter, one composer, three dozens of voice actors), and even though it lacks the polish and the variety that AC has, it not only stands up to its core gameplay, but also introduces some improvements to the formula. And I'm not only talking of multiple special weapons loadouts, conquest mode or even VR, which are undoubtedly great features, but rather the gunplay, which is more satisfying and rewarding than in any AC game. There are also two things people are often forget when talking of PW - those are mercenary mode (disguised as an unlockable difficulty) and modifiers, which will finally give a real challenge to an old school AC fans. Even though PW is missing the cutscenes, I can admire that at least the degree of wackiness in the writing is greatly reduced, except where it's intentionally left in some basic ways just to retain the feel of the AC over the top atmosphere. Dialogues are no longer feel they are ripped from the cheap anime and translated with google, (except some select moments that are clearly made as a homage to AC), making voice acting much more convincing and natural. The fun part is that dialogue between Crimson 1 and Diplomat is there to illustrate how the player feels when the generic pretentious speech (anime villan in this case) kicks in, mocking the AC as the source of inspiration. And this how PW is different - it is self-aware, unlike the AC which tries to make a straight face while acting goofy. And, taking into account that AC7 is one of the weakest installments in terms of writing and storytelling, the next game should really do better than that if they don't want to stall the series once again (for the fourth time that is), but I'm really afraid they won't - they've proved themselves lacking the sense of proposition and always going for the extreme. Remember AC:AH? It was the pinnacle of their erratic running around. They've tried to make a more grounded story, but instead made a carbon copy of CoD:MW, which in its turn was a galore of distillated Hollywood cliches. They've tried to update the game mechanics according to new trends, but turned it into a brain-dead arcade with QTE. They've tried to address the monotonous gameplay loop, but instead broke the pacing by adding out of place turret, gunship and helicopter sections. And what saved the game? Its core gameplay, which luckily remained the same, and the soundtrack which was still a hit. And there were ACI, AC6 and AC3 controversies and criticism showing that Project Aces decision making is even worse than their screenwriting. I am an AC fan, but I wasn't born yesterday and I can critically analyse what I see. The "greatness" of AC is only comprehensible for a very rare type of players which combine awareness and acceptance of Japanese culture peculiarities, tolerance for poor screen writing and pretentious pseudo-philosophy, love for military jets and inability to play real simulators. For some people that's just too much to ask and they will pass on the game even if they know it is good. And that's not the sign of a "great" game. PW, on the other hand, maybe doesn't have such a over the top twisted story, but that might be one of the pros which, combined with lack of AC wackiness and signature Japanese theatrics, will make the game more appealing for the potential players, introducing them to the genre. So I'd suggest to tone down the arrogance and appreciate both titles as they are. I hope Namco recognizes PW merits and will learn from them during the AC8 development.

Daredevil's a jaw-dropping composition for sure, and it's made even better by its leitmotif having been seeded throughout the game's other tracks, most notably the opening dogfight's soaring track, "Charge Assault". It's also used as the game preview track, so you hear this melody every time you open the game -- and then it's used in Daredevil as a vocal melody. Brilliant meta way to prepare us for that climax.

Each one of Ace Combat games has their unique style of music. The latest entries take a more artistic and epic approach while the earlier classic ones have a more arcade-like short looping songs,(except Ace combat 3 ,which was more atmospheric than anything). I really wish a reaction video to the amazing synth rock that Ace Combat 2 Ost has but unfortuantely they're fairly short looping songs,and it could be boring for some people. Im thankful for this great reaction video, you rock

AC1 and 2 were (at least developed as) arcade games, so they lean heavily on synth and electric guitar rock music to get people to come dump quarters into them. AC3 was set in a high-tech future where sentient AI and direct nerve-to-aircraft connection systems are current technology and as such hits hard on the pure electronic/techno. AC4 started the trend of combining inorganic synth with orchestra and choral components, and that was the golden ticket that's been getting iterated on ever since.

This song when put in the proper context just elevates it so much. You're flying within a coalition comprised of aircraft belonging to both your country and rebellious elements of the country you'd been fighting against whose government was hijacked by a bunch of radicals. The radicals had access to a superweapon that was basically a drone carrier, and the drone carrier was linked to a complicated array of systems that basically gave it invulnerability via a shield that was generated around the aircraft whenever it detected missiles. The portion of this music that leads up to the drop at 4:35 is when you're struggling against this thing and the drones its sending out; meanwhile, a small faction of refugees is within the control facility that is inside the International Space Elevator. You're trying to take it out but its shields prevent it from taking any meaningful damage. From 4:27 to 4:34, one of the refugees manages to take out the system providing power to the weapon's shields. There's a brief pause, then the shield goes down right as the climax of the song rings through. It's one of the best moments in gaming especially when you've got eyes on the aircraft as its shield goes down. It's timed so perfectly and it was the main reason why the game was delayed.

Now imagining dozens upon dozens of drones swarming around you, your missile alert alarm blaring constantly, that deadly laser nearly skimming your aircraft over and over again, AA runs raining hailfire all over you. Then the shield drops thanks to the reckless and brave actions of a young princess smashing everything she can see, and every last fighter still in the sky devotes their existence to keeping the drones off of you while you bring that monstrosity down. Yeah, that's Daredevil while fighting the Arsenal Bird.

I have to admit, as much as I love this song, I wish the crescendo could have been louder and higher--but it's still a powerful one and has been great "action fuel" for me. It just leaves me with such a sense of unfulfilled/unresolved tension, like they could have easily taken that part with the loud vocals up to 10 and they only did 7 or maybe 8. I'm sure that was deliberate and they probably didn't *want to* make it that loud but I really feel the absence of that added intensity. I also love how you're taking notes throughout. Can you please also react to any/all of the following (some of these have the crescendo that I feel this one lacks) Assault Horizon--Mrs. Krista Yoslav Assault Horizon--Dogfight AC Zero--El Diablo/Zero AC5--The Unsung War AC4--Rex Tremendae/Dies Irae Final Fantasy 7--One Winged Angel Final Fantasy 6--Terra in Black OC Remix and any song by Sabaton. IF you want some composition fun, go find The Space Battle of Endor Supercut where they have only the space battle clips, and queue this track up when the Death Star gets its first order to fire (@3:30 of the battle), then make sure the break out into the choir singing happens when the A-wing crashes into the Executor's bridge. "INTENSIFY FORWARD FIRE-POWER!" "AAAAAH!!!!" "TOO LATE!" *CRASH* *_"HohooohoooHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!"_*
