I am firmly in the camp of 'everyone, everywhere should play Final Fantasy X at least once in their life.' 😄 It is such a beautiful game. Like, the music on its own is so charming and unique, but it REALLY shines when in heard in the game. The story and visuals add SO MUCH for this soundtrack. At the risk of echoing other comments and being a broken record: Please play Final Fantasy X!

I really love Movement in Green. To me it really gives the feeling of setting out/continuing the journey, and there's much more to come. While it sounds hopeful, it also has a slight feeling of somberness to it, like a lot of songs from the game. There's a lot I want to comment on for Lulu's theme, but I struggling to find the words in a way that doesn't have spoilers lol. So I'll just simply say, it's a fitting theme for the character. Your analysis of these songs is pretty interesting. Not saying if your guesses are correct or not, but if you do end up playing FFX, this would be a fun reaction video to look back on.

"To Zanarkand" plays during the opening cinematic for the game, so all the songs that use its melody like this one give you kind of a nostalgic feeling.

I have beaten this game multiple times and I have NO idea when Lulu's Theme plays haha. My guess was Yojimbo's area. Looked it up, I was right! I forgot those two had any sort of connection in the story.

Lulu's theme is one of my favourite character themes, specifically because it is used as a battle theme for Lulu's tragic backstory. I am really impressed that you got the cave vibe from it, as that battle occurs in a cave.

Movement in Green is for me the best version of the "To Zanarkand" motif in the game, I think the instrumentation for it sounds better than just the piano, really strong melody nonetheless. Not a fan of Lulu but their theme is really interesting, evokes a lot of emotion but I can see it working as a theme for a location too

Lulu's theme is quite interesting to me because I first heard it before I actually played the game, and I just thought it was their way of playing up the idea of her being this creepy goth character. There's something about her song that I saw as quite beautiful, but also haunting and mysterious. It was only when I later played the game, and learned about Lulu's past, that I picked up on the element of sadness in the song, which, by that point, actually made so much more sense for her character.

I think JRPGs in general really evolved in the "right way" music-wise. To me, they always kept the strong melodies and harmonies while adapting to modern scores and / or orchestras. That's why music in Remake and Rebirth work so well, as it does with 15 or KH, because they always kept the idea of having strong melodies more than anything else. Xenoblade does that incredibly well, so as Octopath, Granblue Fantasy Relink, and a ton of other games

The theme of the game is mostly sad, but persevering, and this is one of the songs that I feel embodies that theme the best in the game. When you actually get to Zanarkand, though, the music just gives you chills... Oh, and no, you do hear To Zanarkand first. It's in the very intro scene to the game, and then in a few other scenes. When you actually get to Zanarkand which is the stated goal of the game from the start, you're treated to something else entirely.

God, I wish they would perform Lulu's Theme by a real live orchestra some day in one of their concerts. Many of Uematsu's compositions from VIII, IX or X never get the treatment they deserve, instead concerts like Distant Worlds focuse only on "fan favorites". It's really sad.

Nobou was about 30ish percent involved. Junya Nakano made alot of tracks like Phantoms among others. Masashi Hamauzu is the other one that helped.

I will say that design-wise Lulu and Ultimecia have some similarities, and story-wise, she's a more serious character with a lot of internal struggle.

Thank you for reacting to Sprouting, one of my all time favourite game songs. Also, I never decided that it was my favourite, I just realised it is after seeing how many times I search it up to listen to it because it randomly popped into my head. I literally searched it up and left an extended cut of it on repeat just last month lol. So good. Also, RideZeShoopuf is a great friend for trying to get you to play FFX. It is a beautiful, unique game even as an FF game. The music, characters and story slaps (as the best FFs do). I will be there on day 1 if you ever do play it lol.

Lulu is a party member, and the only time her theme plays is in the "Cavern of the Stolen Fayth" but Lulu's history is tragic and the fight in the cave is related to her past.

Remastered version of Movement in Green, while a bit different in instrumentation, is absolutely gorgeous and I prefer it to the original. The whole soundtrack is phenomenal in both versions

On your point on orchestral music lacking melodies - I think the best example in Monster Hunter 3's soundtrack vs World. Tri's area themes have such strong melodies that even though it's an orchestra you never really get "lost", and they mix in the MH leitmotif so fantastically that the songs are very, very memorable. By contrast, I don't remember a single song from World aside from maybe Nergigante's theme. It's specially noticeable in the songs with versions in both games, like Deviljho's theme. It sounds boneless in World, whereas in Tri it sounds so imposing. I want that back man.

To me, FFX's soundtrack is really moody. Really great at transcribing the vibe of certain scenes or characters (Wandering flame for example, I think you really liked that one too). Not the most jam packed soundtrack compared to others, but it's doing its own thing that sets it apart from previous FF titles and it has a special place in my heart

A lot of modern triple A games have been pushing for a more... blockbuster hollywood style narrative, and that includes the soundtrack for the most of it. Which isn't necessarily "bad", it's an image they wanna create I guess, but like you said, it doesn't make for memorable songs, only memorable "moments" within the game.

Movement in green clearly alludes to the green ooze you trudge through in the sewer this plays in. Jokes aside it's my favorite version of the To Zanarkand theme. Makes me want to into the forest and explore.

To Zanarkand was, like, the very first theme in the opening sequence, so there's not a whole lot that comes before it. Also, you should play FFX (and possibly FFX-2 and Final Fantasy X-2: Last Mission). Definitely worth it. But be prepared to laugh (possibly obnoxiously) and cry.

if i recall correctly it was only used one during that one optional cave and you could buy all OST ingame to play it in the background but Lulus theme was a more "hidden" ost to get. i remember playing the entire game while not being able to purchase certain tracks ingame

funnily enough, you mentioned that Lulu's theme sounded like a cave; the first pilgrimage she had (she's in her 3rd in the story), the person she was supposed to protect died in one. So she probably is haunted by / regretful of what happened in her past which is why she is so somber.

Honestly don't think x-2 is that bad 😮 I think it's actually quite good when you accept that it's an entirely different genre with a different tone than ffx

I dislike FFX-2 as much as the next guy (well I definitely hated it for the first 10 years of it's release) but the music is incredible in my opinion. Some songs can move you to tears, and melodically it's very strong too. Just listen to 1000 words or Yuna's Ballad, or many of the Piano Collections versions of it's OST. It might be a bit too sentimental and emotional for some, which I can see as a negative tonal shift from the typical FF soundtrack, but for me it simply made me want to go and learn those songs on piano just like FF4-10's Piano Collections did. FF12 and 13/13-2/13-3 is lacking in this regard - they have great soundtracks but the melodies can be a bit samey and don't translate well as piano songs and therefore I don't remember or hum them as much. The exception is the main theme of FF13.
