In the sub he accepts the Egyptian stuff when he duels Yugi in Battle City. He just declares it's irrelevant because he's Seto Kaiba with his own life, goals and hardships, not some priest Seto or whoever other people (Gozaburo/Ancient Egypt) want him to be. He then goes and builds theme parks (Kaiba Land) where orphans get free access to.

As a huge fan of Pegasus, I *love* how he and Kaiba function as foils for each other. They're both eccentric billionaire manchildren, true, but in both personality and design they're complementary opposites: 1. One has a blue-centric color scheme, the other has a red-centric color scheme. Simple, but hey. Color theory. It maps onto how Kaiba is super-serious, while Pegasus is flamboyant and playful. 2. One is Japanese, while the other is American. Building on this, "Kaiba" means "seahorse," and the sea is the source of a lot of divine forces in Japanese myth; the Pegasus of Greek myth, meanwhile, is a flying horse, and in the West divinity is associated with the sky. 3. They relate to the public in opposite ways. Kaiba is very showy and flashy and public, and it's all to show how superior he is to the common rabble -- I can't count the number of giant TV screens you see with his intense shouty face on them. Pegasus, meanwhile, is kind of a weird recluse, with his own fairy tale castle on a private island. When he interacts with the public, however, he's very warm and personable -- I love the "Sam is the winner!" scene. If Kaiba is what Elon Musk wants to be, Pegasus is somewhere between Walt Disney and Willy Wonka. 4. They handle grief in opposite ways. Kaiba bottles it all up inside and refuses to process it, as seen in Virtual World and DSoD. Pegasus, meanwhile, regresses into this deranged childish state after his wife dies. It's all very outward and visible. I love how the Toon World book is bright and colorful on the outside, but depicts a dark graveyard on the inside. Syyyyymmmbolism~ I don't want to blab on and on here, riding on Karina's coattails, but it's something that has stuck out to me as I've consumed more and more YGO DM media. And as ridiculous as he is, I'm glad that someone is standing to Kaiba-boy's defense. c:

My favorite topic to get mad about in the entirety of Yugioh is how Mai is never allowed to be a good duelist; her purpose to the plot is to be a benchmark, she only exists to have other plot-important characters beat her to show how strong they are. Considering she's one of the few reoccurring female duelists in the series, it makes me so sad that she gets treated like such garbage by the plot. Kaiba has and always will be my favorite character of yugioh. He starts off a huge a-hole who doesn’t trust anyone, to realizing that just dueling with hate won’t get him anywhere. I think the scene with Mokuba where he wishes Kaiba would smile more is one of the best scenes. I grew up with and pretty much base my opinions on Seto Kaiba entirely upon the English dub of the anime as well, and I truly enjoyed this video. There's just so much that I can say, and I feel like no one will read it. But, this video kinda felt like Karina was organizing her thoughts in case anyone should want to hear her out, because it really does feel like people unfairly poop on Seto Kaiba as a character and don't give him the credit he's earned. I'll try not to reiterate stuff she says too much and keep this to my own thoughts, but I just happen to agree with all of her points. So... some redundancy is inevitable. To be completely honest, Seto Kaiba has always been an important character for me, because I feel like (intentional or otherwise) he showcases and validates the results of emotional abuse and the struggle many people have of letting themselves be happy. That's not everything "deep" or "meaningful" packed into this character, but I relate to those elements on a personal level. I'll reserve my personal issues to this statement only: my mother was intensely abusive to me growing up, making me feel like nothing I did was good enough, and she held my sister to a much different standard; this is something my father and sister have validated, and they remember how many mother would seemingly make a point to aggressively control me and argue with me almost every day. So, I give this preface in order to establish some things: I'm biased towards Seto Kaiba, I probably also read way too much into his actions, and he really means a lot to me too! Like dilfosaur/Karina says, I also enjoy the memes and the jokes about how extra Kaiba is. Because, well, he *is* very extra. But I also feel like people oversimplify him into being just a weirdo with a huge obsession with both himself and the Blue-Eyes White Dragon, and they seem to completely forget/ignore that fact that there are valid reasons for both of those things. Again, she goes into them in the video, and I'm not about to be any more redundant than I already am. He's more than just memes, and it's equally valid to like him for just the memes, the character beyond the jokes and memes and any combination of those. Anyway, I thought this video was great, and it was really well organized. So, thank you for making it! I'm writing all of this because of how emotional I felt by the end of it. My relationship with Yugioh! as a franchise had waned considerably by the time "The Dark Side of Dimensions" released, so this is really my first exposure to it. And, especially considering my thoughts on Kaiba, my relationship with the character and that I share every sentiment dilfosaur brings up in this video, I felt intensely emotional hearing how it ends, and I specifically feel emotional hearing where Seto is left at the end of the film. I suppose my overload of emotion being bottled up into an eccentric response that is a large comment can only be expected given how I deal with them (whoops broke the rule on personal issues here), but know this: I was really moved and validated by this video. I already really love dilfosaur/Karina as an artist (and KZbin personality if that's how I should put it), so it just packed an emotional punch knowing we feel so similarly about Seto Kaiba, one of my favorite characters in anything. As a brief tangent, I love Kaiba's more serious aspects that were covered in the video (as in I love how much I can relate to him and how he grew as a character), but I also adore his unabashed and unashamed love for games, theatrics and the Blue-Eyes. He's so much fun when he's on the screen, and he's part of the reason why I love theater, suspense and making both intense and unforgettable experiences for his audience/opponent. You don't *just play* Seto Kaiba, you *hold nothing back in an all out duel if you have the courage to accept his challenge*. So, thank you again, Karina. There's so much more that I can say, but I'm trying to keep this brief (even if I'm not super good at it). You've always been my favorite part of Drawfee, and I love seeing you passionate about things. It just so happens in this particular case that I shared your passion, and I felt intensely emotional knowing how Kaiba coped with Atem's passing in "The Dark Side of Dimensions". I also wanted you to know that it feels so validating hearing someone I respect say that it's okay to enjoy Seto Kaiba as a character, especially with how I connect with him. Like, hearing how Seto reconstructed the Millennium Puzzle and did so much just to have closure with one of the few people that he connected with... really makes me sad. And I can relate to it in a bizarre way too . So, it's a good thing it's an alternate timeline!! Seto Kaiba deserves happiness. Now, I'm off to go shamelessly love this character and possibly rediscover the original Yugioh! anime. So, thank you again to Karina/dilfosaur!!! And thank you to anyone that may have bothered to actually read this. Considering how emotional this has been, I appreciate it a lot.

i did read this, i dont have that much to say(upon further observation i do have a lot to say) but while i do think its important to highlight the heavier themes in kaiba's backstory, i believe that what his actions in the show are, in the present of the story, make his character truly shine, he is a great amalgamation of a foil/antagonist/secondary protagonist who goes thru several development arcs throughout the show (i am very rusty on the details since i havent watched it in years) but i think he ends up as the deepest and most tangible character in the original. Like he has a reason that is easily explainable by both his feelings, personality and goals for most of his decisions, and i think that makes him the character with the greatest agency over his fate, which i think is his strongest theme/characterization. Even when he acts good when he's supposed to be bad(i.e. a little out of character)(see him giving everyone a ride out of duelist kingdom for an example) it kind of adds to his depth, like he is driven and kind of evil sometimed but he will not do harm for no reason or act petty over inconsequential(in his mind) things, but will go to the absolute unreasonable extremes if he thinks its worth his time. whoaaa very long sorry for writing this idk what came over me(it was the realization that kaiba, joey, atem and yugi are all great characters that are kind of very original and interesting and yugioh is kind of better than people give it credit for)

I checked out the Yugioh manga a few years back and in there, the mind crush gets explained in more detail (Chapter 40) as smashing apart Kaiba's evil heart into a bunch of spiritual puzzle pieces, so that his child soul needs to put it back together the "right way" without all the evil that his upbringing put in there and it's left on a hopeful for the future point (note: kaiba and mokuba are both way more murdery up to this point).

I love Kaiba bc he’s kinda insane. The dude clears out an ENTIRE CITY to play card games. He beats up an old man to destroy his blue eyes. He revives an ancient spirit just so he can prove that he’s better at the game than him. He founded an entire school thats devoted to card games. He put cards in a rocket and sent them TO SPACE. He screws the rules to pull out an literal GOD on his first turn just to beat some random bully. He’s a cocky, petty, insane piece of shit and I love him for that. Same as you, he’s not even my favourite Yugioh character (I’m weak for Yusei), but he’s the character I can talk about how much I love the most.

Great video, really enjoyed it! My one "nitpick" if you may though is that I don't think it's necessary that Kaiba "died" or went to the "afterlife" to visit Atem. You could posit that maybe he went to a dimension that's the equivalent of what ancient Egyptians considered the afterlife / the Kingdom of Osiris since that's presumably where Atem's soul would be according to Egyptian mythology (which has been established as being real) and I'd say that's likely. But Kaiba doesn't believe in the metaphysical, he'd have no reason to believe he'd find Atem there, never mind be able to interact with him in a corporeal form. I think what's more likely is that he went to a different physical reality, a dimension if he will, where Atem still exists, and since he's Seto freaking Kaiba, he likely does have an escape plan, making the ending of this movie and the continuation of his story in GX not necessarily mutually exclusive.
