Thank you a lot, grammar is my weak point and your videos are helping me a lot

So glad I can help! Do you feel like you can hear the difference between a complete sentence and a fragment? It's a hard skill to learn, but I think it's better than getting too deep into the specific grammar rules for parts of sentences.

In number 1 , we have coco azure set numerous records as a female aviator( this is complete sentence) , and the next sentence is having learned to fly with the support of her father ( this is a fragment sentence so why we can't rely them by comma ? why did you rely it to the next sentence " she won multiple.."?
@SetteleTutoring2 ай бұрын
Because the next sentence (she won...) would then just be connected to the first sentence with commas, but that’s not good enough. We would need something stronger somewhere. At the least, we would need a comma plus a conjunction like “and”. Since the period is the only option that provides the necessary punctuation to separate two sentences, we have no choice but to put the “having” clause at the start of sentence 2 instead of at the end of sentence 1, even though both make sense logically.

hi, how would you justify this: This hypothesis suggesting that certain trees survive extreme temperatures cannot stand, researchers argue, unless other explanations are ruled out. No commas required with -ing........ temperatures. please explain in this case why there is no comma to make this extra information. Why is suggesting correct here without a comma?
@SetteleTutoringАй бұрын
No comma is used because there clause is essential to understanding the hypothesis. In my opinion, it’s the author’s choice. We could have used a comma before “suggesting” to make that clause extra, but then we’d also need one after “temperatures” to show where the clause ends. Lots of commas are optional in English, so don’t worry about the exact comma rules beyond those for conjunctions and appositives. The SAT will never design a question where you have to decide on whether an optional comma is better or worse. Something else in the sentence will force your hand.

In number 2 , why B is wrong?
@SetteleTutoring2 ай бұрын
For the same reason as C and D. The second part is not an independent clause. We use a comma+conjunction to join two independent clauses. We don’t have one, so a comma by itself is all we need to join the dependent clause to the sentence.

@@SetteleTutoring but you don't need to put a comma if the participial is at the end of the sentence, right? "They synthesized an artificial version producing nerve repairing compounds." is technically correct no?
@SetteleTutoringАй бұрын
@@kaitlynchen2249 No, I would definitely put a comma before producing. I wouldn’t use a comma if the -ing word were part of the main verb of the sentence, as in: He liked producing nerve repairing compounds.
@kaitlynchen2249Ай бұрын
@@SetteleTutoring Oh I see now after thinking it through! Thank you so much! For some reason I thought the producing nerve repairing compounds was being applied to the artificial version and not the people. In the context of this sentence if the producing repairing compounds was being applied to the aritifical version and not the people would you still need the comma? Sorry if this question is a bit hard to understand. Thank you again!
