Welcome back to the channel!
In this one we are back in the shop setting main bearing clearances and thrust on LT1 small block chevy 350. Then install the crankshaft for the final time!
I used a combination of 3 sets of bearings to get the clearances where I wanted them (all were aluminum BI-metal bearings):
Federal - std
Clevite - std
Clevite - .001 undersized
Had to pull the crank and change the bearings out a couple times and went through 2 packs of plastigauge, but managed to get everything dialed as best as possible...
Main #:
1 - .002
2 - .0025
3 - .0025
4 - .0025
5 - .003
Thrust was @ .003 with which is within factory spec.
Nice to finally have everything starting to go back together! Looking forward to running the stock block LT1. Should make a nice engine for our budget drag car. World record LT1 350?

I will look and see if I can see it in the car as it's back in now. If not I'll look back through some pics. I'm sure I have one somewhere of it.

2 thou (Front main bearing) 2.5 thou ( 2,3,4 main caps) *************************** 3 thou on Rear Main Cap ... what's your take on having 3 thou on the rear main cap? when I took apart mine there was a .001 on the rear main cap from the factory and went with a "standard size" bearing instead to get to 2.5 thou on the rear main cap.. thx

I believe GM opened the clearances up on the #5 bearing because of the wider surface area for one. That bearing is also the thrust bearing and gets lubricated from oil leaking off the rear main bearing. Also, if its going to be raced, loading the converter when staging a car at the track puts more forward pressure on the crank. This can be a real problem with a turbo car that struggles to spool. Have seen them eat the thrust bearing slam out on a otherwise healthy motor. Catch it early and you can just pull it apart and clean and reassemble with new thrust but too late and everything is back to the machine shop to start over. 2.5 should be fine and live a long life! I just opted for a little more insurance at .003.

I think stock on these motors is around 1.5,1.7,2,2,2.5 range. This should fine for any mild build. Just wanted a little more clearance knowing I am going to a power adder with this car and be racing it. With that said, the old saying loose is fast is kind of misleading... For a NA motor with top of the line internal and great machine work, you can get away with really tight clearances! Frees up some extra HP by reducing drag/ parasitic loss. Looser clearances just help add a little cushion for the higher loads of the power adders and a little more room for the iron crank to flex at higher rpm/loads.
