I notice that the Laser class finally allows a cam cleat for the main sheet! It was insanity to not allow that!

Always been allowed as far as I know. Not everyone uses them though.

You're supposed to be constantly adjusting your main sheet to achieve maximum speed, I personally find the cam cleat counter productive as it just slows down the process.
