I’m newly interested in worm composting and was getting worried nightcrawlers wouldn’t be a good choice. But my frogs and turtles cant eat the red wrigglers so thanks for this! I’m hopeful I can use nightcrawlers now :)

Relatively new. I think that I've chimed in before. Anyway, I'm setting up a worm box outside. I was going to order new wiggler stock but, decided to give the natives, which include tons of nightcrawlers, a whirl when I saw so many in the compost pile. I've been very hesitant but, OMG, look at that bin! If my box gets anywhere close to it I'll be singing. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Vee, Thankyou for another great video. I am so pleased to see you are looking so well and are happily 'Loving your worms'. At the moment I have a 'wormery in a bucket' that I would like to enlarge to a tray wormery, not only to give the worms more room, but to give more room to access making the maintenance of the wormery easier. Could I please ask you , if you have any recommendations for the size or depth of tray that would be useful? Thank you very much for your help. Guy❤ P.S. I was going to ask for help about what I could do with wet bedding in the wormery, so pleased to say you have given the answer in this great helpful video. 😊

Thank you so much for commenting and asking! The trees are started out with squirt 20 x 15 x 5 and then that size I used to put about a quarter pound of red wigglers. That size to me is very easy to manage.

If I'm not mistaken. That's one of those concrete mixing tubs. How is it that the worms aren't just crawling out? I've tried it once before. In one of those, and they just head for higher ground. And I make sure that I'm not putting anything in there. That would scare them away. You know, like citrus or acid food. I know that, I do often have a problem with moisture levels either to wet or to dry. I never can seem to find a good middle.

When your bedding is ideal for them they’ll stay put. I’ve been doing this 22 years now. I’ve learned what the bedding feels like and I know their likes and behavior. I have spent a lot of time with them. You’ll get the hang of it☺️ Don’t give up!

i have this problem with euros only, they turn lighter and shrivel up, about 5-10 a day. not protein poisening that i can see altho sometimes i do see a swollen area around the clitelum. they make tons of cocoons and i've tried all kinds of bedding over the last 6 month, bufffered peat, leaves, precompost, coir, cardboard. i've added eggshells and oystershell. it's so odd and doesn't happen to any other worm, (blues, anc, reds). i;ve read about this shrivel up and die thing from another person on reddit but no one had answers! any ideas? euros are my nemisis!!

I can’t really say, but I have two guesses. One would be some form of protein poisoning, and the other one would be very dry environment, but these are just educated guesses. Do you add dolomite lime to your bedding?
@nancyfargo4209
@nancyfargo4209 5 ай бұрын
@@TheGardenAndWormLady yes when i use peat i add dolomite lime and grit. i think at some point you said "give them room" so i've tried splitting them so they are less crowded. also added more moisture. its a mystery. i do make sure the ph is 7.0 now, maybe that will help. and i'll try adding straw as you've mentioned. we'll see! thanks again.

Is it possible for my red wigglers to leave their bin and relocate to my European night crawlers bin... it's right next to it. I can't really tell them apart.
@TheGardenAndWormLady
@TheGardenAndWormLady Жыл бұрын
Yes very possible! Years ago, I saw some wetness on the edge of one of my tubs next to the other one. So I started watching them closely, and my European nightcrawlers we’re crawling into the red wiggler bin. I’ve seen Worms go up wet surfaces like you won’t believe. Once you start fattening them up, you’ll see the difference because the European Nightcrawler will be bigger.

@TheGardenAndWormLady thank you so much! I'm pretty sure that's what has happened. I started with 1000 rw's and 100 enc's. I can barely find any rw and my enc bin has tons and tons if worms. I've only had them 2 1/2 weeks.
