Welcome to "In the Zone", the new video series from Elk101, presented by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation! In this series, Corey Jacobsen breaks down real elk calling scenarios, and details what tactics and strategies were used - as well as what could have been used - to maximize elk calling success.
In this Episode (Episode 3), Corey revisits an amazing morning of elk action in Idaho during the filming of the Destination Elk video series. After climbing nearly 2000 vertical feet with Corey and Donnie, hunt winner Tommy Davis was worn out. But he pushed himself to make it up the mountain to the bedding area, and the guys arrived just as the elk were settling in for the day. With two bulls answering the calls, Tommy and Donnie moved ahead to set up, hoping one of the bulls would come down the hill and into their shooting lane.
If you've ever wanted a play-by-play breakdown of actual elk calling setups to help you become a more successful elk caller, "In the Zone" by Elk101.com is the series you've been waiting for!

a fan of how this series is designed and laid out. The graphics mixed with voice over and real video help illustrate the point. One of these days hopefully soon my brother and I will be among these big beautiful beasts with out archery set ups and they are bugling. As you have said and shown, small adjustments in set up can pay big dividends. My Army bro and I are thinking really hard about an OTC rifle hunt for mule deer in Idaho, if we have the $$$ maybe he will pick up a cow elk tag to potentially fill the freezer. I told him a $35 wolf tag would be worth it just in case, even though we know it will be tough to see them and we are not targeting them specifically.

I'll be bringing decoys this year and hunt mostly solo. It's been hot and early September will probably be hot also mid days. Got a bunch of wallows/springs and water holes on my OnX. Hoping a couple decoys, an appropriately placed decoy, some quality "Elk Talk" and water will do the trick.🦌😊

It amazes me how these rookie hunters stand out in the open and expect to kill an elk. Get brush between you and your animal, they see everything that moves. Even through 100 yards of brush they can spot movement, there lives depend on it. If thee calf wouldn't have seen you, she would have pulled the bull to your zone, instead she ran to him and took him around you.

Cory is an expert no doubt. And he doesn't use those fancy scent killing sprays. Wind baby...always wind!! The area you are hunting should have thermals and depending on the rising sun warming up the valley below will set when those thermals begin.
@FlyingSpaghettoMonster

Thermals go down at night and up during the late morning and late afternoon. They switch direction in the am when the sun begins to warm the valley floor and switch again in the evening when the valley floor begins to shade off. Some parts of the hill side switch early or later depending on how much of the lower elevations get sun exposure and when that sun exposure happens. It's very dependant on you local topography in the area your standing
