Setting up Nissan leaf batteries for 12 volts

Helping a subscriber to set up a 12-volt Nissan leaf battery using Nissan leaf battery modules.

When fully charged you would be at16.4v-16.6v and most 12v inverters max out at 16v how do you get around that???

those two cells can be used as a "12 volt" battery but the voltage per cell does not lend itself very useful as a 12 volt battery except for some uses such as maybe running a trolling motor or l12 volt lights. Like you said the voltage desired to charge to is about 4.1 volts per cell which would make 4 c3lls fully charged 16.4 volts or a little higher. To use as a vehicle battery it could most likely start it but the alternator would try to charge it to 13.8 volts or so equaling about 3.45 volts per cell not giving the cells much of a charge so not much power in reserve. The 16.4 or so might well damage some things such as radios and other electronics like computers. If you tried to use 3 cells the alternator would overcharge the cells likely causing an explosion! This is exactly why most 12 volt lithium battery drop in replacements are Lithium Iron Phosphate that dont explode and whose cell voltage is similar to lead acid. In short dont try to use the Leaf batterys as a vehicle battery.

correct, but would work great as a portable energy bank using a dc/ac inverter or 12v converter. As for charging the pack on grid 14-16 volt charger or solar for off grid.

Enjoyed your video. Can you advise me how I'd make a 48v battery pack for a golf cart? Should I make 2-7 module packs and put them in parallel to get more Ah, or can I connect the 14 packs in series and parallel at the same time and only have one pack and one BMS? I understand how to assemble the Leaf models to get 48V, but I need >100 Ah for my cart. And, I appreciate your slow talk and Bill O'Reilly reference!

Say u had 6 of these could u wire 3 packs up in parallel and 3 in sequence then wire all 6 together giving u more volts and increasing ur ah capcity.

Never charge to 8.3 (very bad, batteries will swell from overcharge) the highest you should charge to is 8.175 or 4.15v per cell. which is around 8.1 volt that 85 90% ish. 8.2 is 100% charge but its not good to charge to 100 for longevity life of the batteries.

What percentage would 7.5 volts be? If someone wanted to charge 2 in series to 15 volts for a 12 volt setup. Can't find the information.

@@dancompagnari4946 (dead) that's about 20% right before drop off on the charge curve. Leaf battery are not meant for 12v applications. 24v and up. you would have to use 18650 which has a nominal of 3.2v per cell. That will give you your 12 range. leaf batteries are 3.7v nominal. The other way you can use leaf batteries for 12v, will be to stack 6+ in parallel then another 6+ in parallel then series them to build your AH(amp an hour). So this can be costly.

It was used the best place to find them are on eBay are at a salvage yard. It has got very hard to find used Nissan leaf batteries at a reasonable price.

Inside of a Nissan leaf module it has four separate batteries two in parallel and two in series. The two in parallel is positive to positive negative to negative the two in series are positive to negative to positive so the center tap is where one positive hook to the second negative and then you use the positive from the first battery and the negative from the second battery and that raises the votes of the battery.

Hey, great video. I'm looking to buy 48 modules from a gen 1 leaf for my house battery wall. The seller says that gen 1 batteries will degrade forever while gen 2 batteries degrade to a point and then die with a short circuit, not a big deal in a high voltage pack but if used in parallel to get 48 volts they're a fire hazard as the other batteries in that bank will deliver unlimited amount of current trying to bring it to voltage. Do you know if that's true?

I have never dealt with the Gen 2 Nissan leaf batteries only with the Gen 1. I have never heard that even all the research that I did before I placed my order never seen that anywhere. I settled for the Gen 1 because the Gen 1 and gen 2 had about 70% left after the degradation in the car so I felt like I would come out with more power with the Gen 1 for the same amount of money by adding extra batteries. When I purchase mines the Gen 1 were $1000 for the whole battery and the Gen 2 were like 1600.

Never heard anything like that happening with them but the Chevy bolt batteries are a big fire hazard even with all the safety stuff under the sun. Store them outside for sure unless you you don't like your home lol.

A BMS is not necessary but it will make it way safer and will keep you from destroying your batteries if you do not keep very close watch on them. I ran with no BMS on my Nissan leaves for over a year with no problem. But I also checked them at least once a day to make sure they did not get out of balance.

You have to consider degradation plus it will be less amps in this scenario. For 12 volt you don't want to exceed 15 volts so I'm not sure how many additional amps you lose.

I don't have any batteries right now I have put all of them in my pack and install them. My buddy's going to order him another Nissan leaf battery when we disassembled it I can do it then. Are you trying to do 24 volt.

I may have asked on another vid, can't remember if it was your video. My inverter operates from 10v-16v. Should I prevent them from discharging that low?

You will be right on the threshold of undercharging them 10 votes divided by 4 is 2.5 per module you have to make sure that it doesn't go under that. to have a margin of error I would try to stay about 10.5 to 11 votes. Just my opinion.

more then likely, your inverter will start the annoying warning chime at 10.5volts signaling you to shut it off, depends on the inverter, some even have adjustability for low voltage cut off, or add one yourself
