thanks dude! had a university module on Linux administration and was hitting a brick wall with the SSH stuff as i've never done it before and was not told I had to go into the config file and uncomment certain things for it to work so this explained why that was going wrong for me too haha. My god. Finally. I spent the whole day trying to figure this one out. Who could have imagined that after generating the public and private keys with puTTY you need to throw out your public key and get a new one after loading the old private key.. Makes no sense.. but it worked. :)

@@henoksamuel1106 I didn't know it at the time, but unlike ssh-keygen utility on linux terminal, puTTY when creating a key pair uses a different format for the public key, for it to be used in a ssh connection through the terminal or mysql workbench. As I remember that was the problem

Couple of point to note, you don't need sudo to create the authorized_keys file if logged in as user, also you need to chmod the .ssh directory to make it readable by the user only.

There we go. Got mine setup. Tested it on my laptop first. I kept adding the auth key and loading the old config to connect and it'd error. Had to load the old preset, add the auth key and then save the preset and connect.

everything i do says access denied access denied for password, i then tried to setup an ssh key to login says it refused it. its a fucking nightmare not knowing these technical terms and code, im learning but at the same time still need to build my website, i cant even login right now

Have you ensured that you are used root privileges (logged in as root or using the SUDO command) and that you have openssh-server package installed?

No they do not. They only stop working when they revoked, aka deleted from the authorized_keys file

Why the hell are you using sudo to edit the user's authorized_keys file? Remember: sudo stands for "SUperuser DO", and it executes the command (nano in your case) as ROOT. That file is owned by you@box, you just created it two seconds ago, using "touch authorized_keys". Out of respect for your followers, please take another turn and learn Unix permissions (not so hard), and then edit the video.

Here as a newbie trying to understand the implications of your statement. So, since the .ssh folder is in the user's home directory, and he is logged in as the user, he as the owner has sufficient privileges to use nano to edit the authorized_keys file. Using sudo would be a huge inconsistency. Is that it? You know what? I really appreciate your comment. Motivates me to dig a little deeper into the subject. Best of luck to you.

"server refused our key" :/ plus this guide is pretty difficult to follow unless you're already running linux correction, this guide is *useless* unless you're trying to connect to a windows machine
