A softbox is ultimately just a simplified or compact book light: a light source, a reflector and a diffuser. The decisive factor is the size of the illuminated area. With a face as the subject, a softbox delivers the same result as a book light if this surface is approximately the same size. With one difference: the spill light is easier to control with the softbox.

Great vid. But you should have adjusted the kelvin on the aputure to match the unbleached muslin for a more representative comparison ;)

They honestly both look really good. 2 Major differencees I see is because the soft box is a smaller source of light, it lights up your face very similarly to the book light....but down below your neck...its MUCH darker. So I am very much getting the vibe you are being lit from a single light source where as the Book Light wraps around your entire body...which is what looks so natural to me over the soft box. So that difference would obviously be more of a creative decision. Do we just want to light the face and only give attention to the face? Or do we want to light the entire talents body? The second major difference is because you DO have the soft box further away, I guess youre blasting the output of the light a bit more and you can see much more harsh specular highlights on your face compared to the book lighting. I guess if you brought the softbox in alot closer - it could look very similar to the book light...BUT is that practical? Do you have the space? are you trying to light more than just yourself or a single person? When it comes to using a book light set up that big? I will use it if more than 2 people are in frame and im shooting much wider. If im shooting much tighter with only 1-2 subjects than I would opt for the soft box and get it as close as I can. I would deff recommend taking the time to set up book lighting if the scene of your shot is much wider and has alot of depth. If its the inverse? Save the time and set up the soft box

Both techniques almost looks the same so I’m gonna use the easy method. Still slowly but surely I’ll go through my journey step by step with the guidance of your videos. Thank you so much and peace ✌🏾

Does the booklet have to be more powerful than the soft box light to get the same effect?
@Alexzarfatifilms8 ай бұрын
Yeah, you definitely need a stronger light. If you’re going to do a book like a regular 120 or 200 watt light Probably won’t cut it.

@@Alexzarfatifilmsthe 7' Impact Parabolic Umbrella Diffuser has a smaller footprint. It uses the same principle of diffusing the reflected light; I am not sure if that is also considered book lighting.

Thanks a lot, gotta check this C-stand out :D I wonder if it's even sold in my country though :D

I see the difference but its not enough for me to do the book light set up. It seams like way more work, longer set up, and it takes up way more space for just a slightly better look. Espessially when we're run and gun videographers. Thank for showing us though.

There is a big difference ...book light is much softer..wow
@robinprobyn19718 ай бұрын
Only because it's a larger source and seems to be a bit closer too. The softness of the light would be identical if the soft box / diff frame / LED panel light , was the same size and distance from the subject .
