I am a left handed drummer. When playing shared gear, I just move the snare and hihat and move the floor tom a little bit back so I can use the floor tom in the side snare location.

Lars, this is a very informative video. I am not left-handed, nor do I play the drums, but many times through the years when I've seen Ringo Starr (a left-handed drummer) interviewed and him explaining how he plays a right-handed setup since that is what he learned on, and how that affects his playing. As a non-drummer, it has always been difficult for me to understand his explanation but your video showing the different setups made it easier to understand. Thanks.😀

Bought an Alesis Nitro for my 9 year old, and like a plonker set it up for myself being a right hander, I simply thought he’d be fine by not crossing his hands over to play the high hat & snare, and I forgot about his left foot! I loved the setup for myself but now have to re-jig it for his natural playing style. Bloomin lefties!

Thanks man! I've been plaing drums for few years and just looking around to find some video that said -it's okey to put china above hi hat and both crushes on left side (i play 3. Variation- fully left!) Now i think no one will tell me that my symbals are standind totaly wrong! 🤘

Very informative. I'm a right-handed drummer. Every once in a while, I attempt to practice open-handed just to keep my left in shape.

Why would, nay should, a left-hander compromise on an instrument that is 100% reversible/reconfigurable? We lefties put up with enough shit in a right-handed world as it is.
@larswickett Жыл бұрын
Exactly right Scott. You shouldn’t. But if you are booked to play on a gig with a kit share with 15/20min change over and you simply don’t have time or in the case that I’ve experienced a few times it’s on a custom rack kit and can’t be change around just like that. What do you do?, cancel the gig or be prepared as a professional to be able to work both ways. I believe that should go for both right and left handed players, plus you build your skills better than most by being able to play in multiple configurations.

As an open hander, I follow the Dennis Wilson mantra of using the left hand on the hats because it was the closest stick. Of course, Dennis Wilson never took a drum lesson in his life and he was better off for that.

The other option that you didn't mention was to use a remote (cable) hi-hat pedal, which then allows you to use your right foot to activate the hi-hat and your left foot to be able to play the bass drum.... which is my preferred option...

Yes that’s a great option

@@bonhelm1 I wasn't referring to triggers if you were coming in my remark about the remote pedal. The remote pedal is a mechanical option not a electrical one
@bonhelm1 Жыл бұрын
@@keithaugeri7820 so how would you have that setup? Still on a right handed kit, but sitting with your left foot on the kick? Without moving the hats and snare so they’re now on the left side of your body? What’s in between your legs, the floor Tom? I’m having trouble imagining this lol

I'm a queer one, I fire shotgun or rifle from left shoulder, write, paint, use woodwork tools with right hand, draw with either hand.....and a lefty drummer. I started on a regular kit, but used your easy rider type set up. BUT recently (for a laugh)😆 went "full lefty" option 4, and started learning left footed bass drum., And I do like the abidextrousness, satillopen handed. Slightly odd at first, but it was a case of consciously making the left foot more active. PLUS when I swapped back, the hi hat was giving me way more possibilities (speed and power)

Totally the more options you can try and master the more skills you have to unlock the brain and body to better playing.

Of course, I’m the goofy footed guy, that can’t seem to find the answer he’s looking for or it doesn’t exist or perhaps you may have answered it in this video in reverse¿ lol If I am right handed but left footed, what would you recommend? (&/or what have people in the past recommended?) My guess/takeaway from your video would be that I should do the opposite of the Easy Rider that you demonstrated?… So go with a left handed set up & play open handed with the ride on my right?… & I may have that confused, so your input (as well as anyone else’s would be greatly appreciated. Particularly if you are right handed but left footed like me & you play the drums! - Thanks in advance!

Realistically a drummer should be able to play both hands equally
@larswickett Жыл бұрын
For practical purposes yes but in realistic terms a large percentage of players have a weaker hand and when it comes to swapping an entire kit orientation with then foot patterns swapping hats and kick over that can become a whole new discipline. So by having playing options to bridge the gap can be very useful for drummer to be able to work in an everyday scenario that may be presented to them if they’re independence is not on a level to be able to play equally both sides.
@YungAirheadOfficial Жыл бұрын
At first, I used to think every drummer played left handed.

1. How about right handed drummers set up left handed you will see how stupid your options are. 2. When your a lefty nobody will mess with your kit. 3. Rinse and repeat
@larswickett8 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment if you think the options are stupid thats a shame. But actually the potential uses for them for real world applications are far from stupid and giving people alternatives to advance their drumming options if they’re struggling to figure out the best options for them is what this is all about.
@MojosCoffeehouse8 ай бұрын
Why does everyone need to play right handed? Your just avoiding playing left handed like its a sin. @@larswickett
@larswickett8 ай бұрын
@@MojosCoffeehouse I’m not saying it’s a sin at all to play left handed, everyone should play their most comfortable configuration. So this is all about giving people different options from right handed to left handed and everything in between so that as a player you can be versatile. The reason for this idea was actually from my professional experience of being on shows where kit shares were a must and the headline act would not allow the kit to be changed around, luckily I can play both Left and right kit setups otherwise my band would not have been able to perform that night. So that’s where the idea for the set up options came up, nothing to do with stoping people playing left handed. I encourage the most comfortable playing position for the individual player to make drumming accessible to all. Have a great day
