When I use to go to IKEJA back in 79. I would go into the Shrine, relax, move around, as people would be selling things to smoke, drink and chew… the stage was made with multi levels of height differences and some platforms were suspended from the ceiling to the left and right flanks of the stage… Fela would always say” once you are inside you are safe, don’t attempt to leave during the nights darkness” I was always in until daybreak, when the streets were safe.

Fela music was a fusion of Jazz and African beats , so it definitely was derivative of different influences.Current afrobeats is fusion of rap, reggae dancehall and african sounds .

Your comment is confusing, u make it seem as if the interviewer was wrong. If u meant SEUN'S GRANDMOTHER then u are right, cos the interviewer said It was FELA'S MOM, which is correct. The woman was FELA'S mom not his Grandmother.

Fela was wise but a bit to extreme in regards to his life statement of africaness. Leading him to engage is condom less sexuality and denial of HIV medication. Before dying he knew about his diagnosis but refused the western medication.

with all due respect, seun kuti is not being honest (or he’s ignorant): everybody knows that fela kuti was heavily influenced/inspired by JAMES BROWN, whose music he encountered when he was touring the united states in the early 70s! even NIGERIANS referred to fela as “the african JAMES BROWN”. NOBODY ever referred to JAMES BROWN as “the american fela kuti”. FOH 😑
