This documentary is rather brilliant. It does not fall into myths and assesses the situation fairly. The Constitution especially, my own view is that it should have been officially Catholic (93% people.), this is apart from any subsequent freedom of religion clauses by the way. It is constructed in a very Catholic manner sure, as in social provisions, however the referendum function fundamentally destroys it. A simple majority to amend the Constitution, with Parliamentary support of course, is absurd and makes the document rather worthless. It is important as a statement of authority and Ireland is rather unique as having little bloodshed and an established elite capable of statecraft at this level. The Church was an alternative power source and largely deferential to the State, as the State was deferential to the Church, such as on the very issue of the Constitution. As for women, while there were organisations that objected, why they should have been listened to is the question. They were not evidently but it was voted through by a majority, including women who notably had the vote already so not sure how you can use the Second-Class citizen argument. It is a bit annoying the economic war was glossed as I wanted to know more about what went on. Changing the markets ought to have been a priority.
