Driving over the Seven Mile Bridge to go to Key West. The Seven Mile Bridge is in the Florida Keys, in Monroe County, Florida, United States. It connects Knight's Key (part of the city of Marathon, Florida) in the Middle Keys to Little Duck Key in the Lower Keys. The Seven Mile Bridge is the longest bridge in Florida. Despite its name, the total length of the Seven Mile Bridge is actually about 6.79 miles (10.93 km). The bridge provides breathtaking views of the turquoise waters of the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. From one end of the Seven Mile Bridge to the other, it is about a ten-minute drive. The original Seven Mile Bridge was built in the early 1900s. It was as part of the Overseas Railway, which was later converted to the Overseas Highway. The original bridge was replaced in the early 1980s by the current bridge. The new bridge was completed in 1982 and is a prominent feature of the Florida Keys Overseas Highway (U.S. Route 1). The bridge is a popular spot for fishing, and anglers often gather on its spans to catch a variety of fish. It also offers fantastic views of the surrounding waters, and wildlife such as dolphins and sea turtles. About halfway across the bridge, there is a small island called Pigeon Key. Pigeon Key was originally used as a construction camp for workers building the original bridge. In 1935, the original bridge was severely damaged by the Labor Day Hurricane. The current bridge is designed to withstand hurricane-force winds. The Seven Mile Bridge has been featured in several films, including True Lies, 2 Fast 2 Furious, and Licence to Kill.
