FROM ELONPIR
Erkki Kannosto, 1992
Location: Siilainen, visit from Noljakantie (Seljatie 9 on the map)
The Elonpirta monument was erected in memory of the Reds who were shot in the civil war in 1918. The monument was unveiled in 1992. The seven-column granite work was designed by visual artist Erkki Kannosto (b. 1945). Its architectural starting points can be found in the pure round temples of antiquity. According to the text attached to the work, freedom, people's power, equality, human dignity, justice, peace and solidarity should be the seven basic pillars of building society.
The civil war of 1918 was perceived to be somewhat milder in Joensuu than the rest of Finland, but executions of Reds still took place in Joensuu. Some of the 17 executed were townspeople, and some were prisoners of war brought from elsewhere. About a dozen people from Joensuu also lost their lives in the post-war prison camps.
