this film is a truly an INCREDIBLE viewing experience! its like 3 and a half hours long but, due to its meticulous pacing, masterful editing, its true to life and colorful characters and wonderful story it runs like an hour and a half. its cinematography and sound design are exceptional and Kurosawa's direction was flawless. just a classic by any standard and among the BEST movies ever made. A MUST SEE!

I believe in some recent poll this was voted the best or favorite Foreign Language (non-English speaking) film ever. That would comprise films made in Sweden, France, Italy, Germany, China, etc. And, let's be frank, Hollywood or no, it's one of the best films ever.
@42kellys4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is. It is only a pity that the another foreign masterpiece is so unknown. Although it is still unfinished due to the tragedy of the title character-actor's death, even unfinished, it is unmatched and perfect. It is The Idiot 1958. If you want to see another foreign masterpiece look out for that. It is on KZbin, by the way, in its entierity, original language with subtitles. Beautiful Russian, I only love wacthign films original with subtitles, because much is lost when they are dubbed.

I'm Japanese and this is the moment when I think this may be the best movie I've ever watched but at the same time I felt it somehow off from my taste or felt it a bit off my tasting being Japanese or being immersed in the meaning about being born as a Japanese. And started liking Raizo Ichikawa(actor) starring movies better like 'Sleepy Eyes of Death 2 - Sword Of Adventure' even thou it's story-telling is less dramatic and there are less action scenes. Maybe Kurosawa's movie looks a bit like the ones John Ford would make, to my Japanese eye. Kurosawa's movies are great but do not melt in rich and moist way in my mouth. well, anyway this is a very minor Japanese opinion of mine and many Japanese like this great movie for sure.
@btbbass19845 жыл бұрын
I think that one of the greatest Kurosawa's achievements was to contaminate the traditional canons, to make non Japanese audience be able to better understand his work. They where masterpieces about Japan for the world, not only for the Japanese
@42kellys4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for telling me your opinion it is so interesting to hear a Japanese person his own experience of this film. I personally appreciate of you sharing this opinion with all of us. Can I ask you why is it not so much Japanese for you? If I understood you well you said it is a bit foreign to you even though it is Japanese and about Jaspanese and the maker is Japanese and you are also Japanese. I would appreciate it. Thank you in advance, looking forward to your answer.
@carlosluismendez73922 жыл бұрын
mmmmm Why john ford? I don't think Ford had a clue about Noh theater and Kurosawa IMO was a very Japanese storyteller. In Ford movies the Indians are really dumb and Kurosawa actually avoids that trap with his characters. A lot of what Kurosawa did was already developed by Daisuke Ito, Masahiro Makino, Sadao Yamanaka and Hiroshi Inagaki. Never understood that critic about Kurosawa.
The Japanese culture is impressively founded on a dignified code of honor. I'm glad that this movie is on KZbin - I found it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpypcq2giayXo6c. I'm going to watch it tonight. A few years ago, I've read 'Code of the Samurai: A Modern Translation of the Bushido Shoshinshu of Taira Shigesuke' by Thomas Cleary (1999). I share lots of ethical principles and I also learned about their code of honor. I fully disagree with the suicide part. The novel 'Nabe no Kata' by Kiyoko Murata (1987) got the Akutagawa prize and it was adapted for cinema by director Akira Kurosawa. I haven't seen that movie, but the novel is great. But I've seen the movie 'Hatchi' several times. It's a movie with Richard Gere and it's the story of a destiny meeting between a dog and its master. The story is founded on a true Japanese story and is a great sensitive movie that I love a lot. 🙂
