This actually makes a lot of sense. The other houses are quick to jump in and help, but Slytherins think ahead. They know that the enormity of Voldemort's forces and they know that they'll need back-up. Most Slytherins are well-connected, so they'd have a lot of people outside the school to encourage to fight in the war. It would also give them time to plan out a strategy.

Something tells me that in the battle of Hogwarts it boiled down to this Slytherins : ran because most families had ties to darkness and didn't want to be on Voldemort bad side, but at the same time they slipped away out of fear and ran off as a snake can do Ravenclaws : Some Ravenclaws did stay but a majority left, a lot of the elder classmates stayed and my idea is that Ravenclaws probably deliberated and decided whether it was safe to stay or leave and probably thought it best for younger students to leave for safety reasons given the reason why elders stayed, they toyed with the idea and most thought it was best to do. Hufflepuff: due to their undying loyalty they immediately felt it was best to stay regardless of any death or destruction that Hogwarts was their home and that staying and fighting was the best course of action regardless. Gryffindor : Majority if not all being in the DA and being friends with Harry and knowing full well what the cause was they stayed and defended Hogwarts out of bravery and wanted to protect it no matter what Is this the jist of what happened? am i the only one who read into this this way?

Fun fact about Hogwarts house elements! Did you know that each common room is built around their Element tied to the house? Gryffindor(Fire) Common Room is well known for its roaring fireplace. As Rebecca stated Slytherin is associated with Water in which the Common room is located bellow the lake and he windows are illuminated by the green Water. Ravenclaw(Air) Common room is said to have a calm breeze whistling through the windows, and the Hufflepuff (earth) common room is located in basement and has many earthy features such as "rippling grass and dandelions". #ravenclaw
