I'm sharing my observations and reflections on our month of homeschool in January 2025. We've had an unusual January--extra time off of school, spent going on adventures with relatives visiting from the USA.

I'm Rachel, a mom of three and the oldest in a family of 8 kids. I'm a second-generation homeschooler who is passionate about education. I'm originally from Michigan, but am living overseas. My two young boys and teaching homeschool lessons to my youngest sisters keep me busy, but I make time for writing and for making KZbin videos, too! How is a child in grade 1 doing multiplication?!? 😅 That's amazing. I'm increasingly interested in your curriculums!

He has a natural knack for numbers--he figured out multiplication and division in Kindergarten--not my plan, but hey, it makes it easy that this year he's just been working on solidifying a few of the bigger facts that he hasn't fully memorized. haha! (and when he gets to 3rd grade, when multiplication is traditionally taught, we'll just work on other skills. :)

We don’t have much normal school schedules as we travel school but it’s worth it!!! We do some morning time and bookwork on our travels!!! It’s awesome that ur son can do independent work at an age appropriate way and is keeping skills!!!

Do you still use Spelling Connections with your first grader? And are you planning to add Explode the Code for your pre-K-er at some point? I'd love to hear more of a breakdown of your big picture planning for phonics and spelling and how/when you combine AAR, spelling, ETC, and Spelling U See!

Yes, my 1st grader uses Spelling Connections. I will eventually add Explode the Code for my younger son--probably around when he finishes AAR Level 1--I like to use Explode the Code as independent work/review, which means that their reading level is a little bit more advanced than the concepts being covered in ETC. For right now, my Pre-K son, who is a very beginner reader (i.e. he can do CVC words and is working on short vowel words with beginning and ending consonant blends)--is using AAR, Spelling U See A, and handwriting, and that's it. My estimate is that I'll add in Explode the Code around when he "officially" begins Kindergarten in August. I am just curious have you ever used any curriculum from BJU? I was looking into their video lessons for history and science for my younger two to help take something off my plate!

I haven't used anything from them but I know of them. For myself, I don't tend to use a lot of video in early grades, but I know that it works for some families.

@@SevenInAllI usually don’t either but trying to find ways to take something off my plate to help my special needs twins who will be starting 9th grade and will need some one on one attention for some things. Do you have any simple recommendations for history and science for a 2nd grader and kindergartener together?

@@beachgurl788 Something like the Abeka Science readers or History readers might be a good option for a really simple and streamlined approach.
