Seventeen moments of Benidorm, moment two. Poniente seafront. Costa Blanca. Spain

We are in Benidorm, Costa Blanca, Spain. Travelling we have visited many beautiful cities - Cape Town and Casablanca, Sharm el Sheikh and Stockholm, Singapore and Dubai, Los Angeles and Miami, Paris and London, Porto and Dublin, Venice and New York - but nowhere have we seen such an original promenade as in Benidorm. The opening of Benidorm's new promenade of Poniente Beach to the public took place on Friday night, 24th July 2009. This important event in the history of Benidorm was not to be missed by the hundreds of citizens who filled the promenade from the early hours of the morning. The Mayor of Benidorm, Manuel Pérez Fenoll, dedicated his first words to Generalitat Valenciana President Francisco Camps, of whom he said that "he is the father of this magnificent work". He also thanked former mayor Vicente Pérez Deves and Minister José Ramón García Anton for their commitment and tenacity in the past so that "this great project that we are opening today can be realised.The surprising thing about this speech was that usually officials prefer to take all the credit, but the mayor humbly did not mention himself at all.
The need to transform the Poniente beach promenade was long overdue. It had remained in its original, outdated state for a very long time. In the 1970s it was covered by a mediocre pavement and then by a heavy concrete balustrade, 120 cm high, which visibly obscured the sea view. Access to the sandy beach was only possible every two hundred metres via an ostentatious "imperial staircase". This is what the Poniente beach promenade looked like before the reconstruction. That changed in 2002, when the Benidorm city council and the Generalitat Valenciana decided to allocate more than ten million euros for the reconstruction of this promenade. A competition was launched to find an architectural solution strong enough to streamline the high promenade. In a transversal sense, the intervention was to improve accessibility to the beach and the visual connection between the town and the sea. In 2006, the results were announced and the competition was won by the small, family-run architectural firm of Carlos Ferrater and Xavier Martí from Barcelona.
The work, which began in September 2006, was a joint venture between Dragados and Ecisa, with an investment of over €19,500,000 and a duration of 34 months. The main idea of the project, according to its creators, is "to unite the city with the sea, a boundary between the natural and the artificial, achieving a model that is innovative and does not exist in the world. The construction characteristics of the new Paseo de Poniente, a ceramic surface for walking 13,600 square meters, 4,500 square meters of wooden decking on the beach, 700 tons of steel in steel structures, 30,000 square meters of formwork and 20,000 cubic meters of earth excavated to create it.
The paving consists of coloured glazed stoneware with a diameter of 43 cm.
